2x engine issues/queries

  Clio 182
Alright guys, got 2 issues with my 182, had a search on forum but couldnt find anything that fits the exact description of my problems... Which seeing ive only had the car for around a month im hoping these arent majorfirst one: got the emmisons light on solid atm, came on at the weekend when driving down motorway with cruise control on, not been hammering car and the mpg seems unaffected since it came on and theres no smell of it running rich, iirc there is a reciept for a decat pipe in my paperwork, which I have a feeling may be causing this, but it seems a coincidence that it came on a couple of days after I replaced the cone filter fitted on the car with a standard replacement airbox - also not too sure if this could have influenced this?secondly: when I start the car from cold and its ideling it sound pretty normal and not too noisey, but after I have been running it, it sounds a bit rougher - like a sort of tappety noise, I mentioned this to a mechanic I met who I was selling another car to, and her said to drain oil then flush the engine with some fortifying stuff then replace oil? Dont know if this is a standard procedure for something like this, but that said he suggested that based on my description and never heard the noise himself. But thought i'd check to see if anyone has had any similar noise/symptoms, as I find it strange as I would expect it to sound worse when cold rather than warmprob worth noting also that the timing belt was changed when I bought the car, but this noose may have been present before this was done, its not really over the top so poss just not noticed it before,finally... Regarding the first problem with light, would anyone reccommend the £42 code reader from ktec racing to investigate this further? Cheaper than diagnotics from a local garage me thinks, thanks in advance, apologies for lengthy post and any spelling mistakes - type via my crappy touch phone

sounds like it could be lambda related (swap the pre-CAT one with the post-CAT one to see if there is any change), but hard to tell from what you've said. Tappety wise, the engines are naturally like that, but if it's really bad it will be the inlet (dephaser) pulley. Do a video ;)
don't use engine flush on it though. Changing the oil may help, but make sure you use something decent like motul. (Don't use Mobil)

The light will most likely be due to the decat.Without hearing it, it does sound like a possible dephaser issue - thats new cambelt time - £600

have a look at the exhaust it will be obvious if decatted (you will have a straight pipe rather than a bulbous looking one)

As for the tappety sound, change your oil for a decent brand you can afford. Opie Oils have offers on from time to time but are not always the most competitive when factoring in postage. And DONT use engine flush!

As for the code reader a basic OBD2 one can be had off ebay for £20

Thanks for the replies, is there any guides about where the o2 sensors are located? Had a smilar problem with my mr2 before with these, but just let them be since there seemed to be no detrimental effect to mpg/oil consumption.as for the noise, my description of 'tapping' may not have been the best, I did notice a thread here where someone had a tapping noise and dephaser was suggusted as the problem, but that one sounds much worse than mine. Will try an get a video up tomorrow morning so of the noise from engine bay- might just be normal for a clio but since ive never heard another 182 running before, I might just be para.as for the code reader, is it possible to post a link for a suitable one from ebay? Are these as good or better than the ones from ktech?, cheerssteven

Bump :p - any ideas from video if engine just sounds a bit rough or if there is a problem with it?, most videos on youtube about dephaser show a lot of knocking when reving but mines doesnt do this, just a bit tappety when ideling after running for a bit

Cheers

Does the tappety noise speed up with the revs or cut out after a certain point?

Nick,

I have attached another video, took the car for a drive as the noise only appears when warm, by the sounds of it the noise seems constant while reving, doesnt seem to speed up or slow down - just drowned out by engine noise, I held the revs at 00:21-00:30 which you can clearly hear it still at the same pace.

The noise seems more apparent when directly above engine rather than listening from any particular side, from the videos I have seen it does sound like a dephaser pulley fault, but I have also been reading that similar faults have been wrongly diagnosed and people have had these replaced and it has not fixed the problem.

Went to rentech in edinburgh (never realised they were in edinburgh), fault can now be confirmed as dephaser pulley, so dephaser, timing and aux all need replaced, grand total of £690,just had timing done when I got it in july, which was an additional 200 on top of my purchase price so a bit gutted lyk.anywhoo, got a warranty with a third party company when I bought car, so rentech have been in touch to see if I can get them to cough up and cover costs...so will have to wait and hear before anything gets done, anyone on here had experiences with warranties2000? According to the forms I was provided with these parts should be covered, but I am slightly aprehensive when it comes to companies like this seeing it may seem too good to be true?cheerssteven

Update:

Well turns out nothing is covered by the warranty so think my 5-6weeks of owning a clio sport are coming to an end, although rentech generously offered to discount the cost to £650, I don't think I can justify such a high expense considering I got the car for £3.8k and paying an additional 5th of the cost to replace these seems ilogical.
Will have to have a long hard think on this one...:(

Re the warranty, grab 10 minutes and the policy booklet and look at what is covered. It should be fairly straightforward.
You can't rely on the garage to fight your warranty claim as the insurer will just reject it at first. Third party warranties need to be pursued.
If your warranty covers engine-related damage, then no reason why the work should not be covered. Ask them why it is not covered. Sometimes they want you to go to one of their approved garages for an inspection.
The warranty must cover something!

For example, shortly after I got mine with an AA 5 Star warranty (nothing to do with the AA, just their name on it), the ball joints were creaking. Fred at BTM diagnosed it and I rang the warranty company. Ball joints were listed as covered but the guy said to me their definition of failure is "a catastrophic failure" of the component and the knocking was not enough.
I then explained to him that I was a solicitor (which helped), and that if I had a "catastrophic failure" of the ball joint at high speed, the warranty claim would be the last of my worries! I said to him that I had had a quote from a specialist at a fraction of the cost Renault would charge to change the whole arm(?) and they were still being difficult. He said get the work done, send the receipt in to a reference number he gave me and I got a cheque for £90 odd. Not a lot, but it was the principle.

Sent another email to a guy at warranties2000, who seems to be dealing with my email responses to the claim (his reply rate is quite good so here's hoping for a good response). I have read through my policy booklet, and in no part does anything mention 'wear or tear'. The following are covered under the 'engine' section of the documentation: Engine: All components contained within the cylinder block head, including pistons, rings, crankshaft, big end bearing, manifolds, rocker, assembly, timing chains, timing gears, distributor drive.

...I am no mechanic, but I'm pretty sure somewhere in 'timing chains, timing gear, distributor drive', that the dephaser pulley should fall under this category. I also noted in my email that the mechanic would have stated that the aux belts need changed and that I would be willing to cover the cost of these myself as they are not faulty at this present time and are 'recommended' to be replaced. Therefore in regards to my claim, I am only looking for the dephaser pulley and subsequent timing belt to be replaced.

From reading the booklet my car seems in full compliance with their policy conditions (which I have stated), so will have to wait a response and see how this pans out. It's not as if I took it to a Renault dealer who would charge £'s more for fixing this, as far as I understand Rentech are independent/ competitive, so realistic costs for this work

Cheers

Continue to press them on it. If your guy does not come up trumps, raise a formal complaint, they will have a procedure for this because they should be financial services act compliant. Be a nuisance and unless their policy does actually exclude it, you should get something. As a final threat, if required, say you will complain to the financial ombudsman service, who I think deal with insurance/Fsa regulated firms.
