36k service myself...Should I, shouldn't I???

After all of the frankly ridiculous quotes for the 36k service on 51 plate 172, I have looked into the cost of parts and it seems to be around £60. Based on that, where does the justification for £250-£300 of labour charges come from?

I am more than able to carry out the service myself and to be honest would be happier doing so based on the opinions of some of the stealer monkey technicians from people on here.

If I had a wodge of receipts for all the service parts, would this look as good as a dealer stamp in my service book?

i think i might do this too, i mean the hardest thing to do must be the aux belt, dont know how its done yet but cant be that hard

not as good obivously, but bearing in mind the £250 your saving, and however much you spend on the next service... and the next.
just say you are an ex mechanic when you do sell it and you should be sorted :)

It can't be worth £300 notes in labour though can it? Thats £100 an hour labour charge if it takes 3 hours. With the money I save I can have the tracking done, use better quality oil etc and *cough* get a mate to stamp my book *cough*.

But would the pile of receipts instead of a dealer stamp put potential buyers off?

Good point, if I kept that car for 3 years and saved £250 on 3 services, the car wouldn't be worth £750 less come sale time would it?

My dad is one of the most mechanically minded people in the world so I could say he did it.

I'd love to but I live in Leeds. When you say 'all in', is that aux as well?
Why do you say be careful? How easy/difficult is it?

im after a 172..and in my opinion.. if its not stamped or garenteed or what ever then it discourages me. The fact that a sole person has done the job doesnt prove to me that the work has been done correctly, or to a decent standard.

Just sayin, would much rather have a stamp on the 36k,

  Turbos.
Sorry to hijack but is it a cambelt change at 36k then?

What else gets done? Anyone got a part number list?

Also, should i stick to Renault's recommend oil is there something defo better?

Cheers!

So you'd prefer a stamp than receipts proving the work had been done. That's the sort of thing I want to know as I would like to know what sort of impact this will have on resale.

Cambelt is recommended at 72k but I wanted mine a little earlier. Although the cheapest price I was quoted for the belt, aux and 36k service was £800 by an independent. One Renault stealer quoted £1100!!!!!! Hence, I will prob service it myself.

Silkolene is meant to be good quality stuff but it's not something I've researched at this stage.

A list of part numbers would be good, and anyone who can stamp my service book LOL.

Or you could get yourself a copy of " Quick Invoice " and make out your own receipt , non existant garage , parts , labour charges etc .....

It would look alot more convincing ;)

Here is the demo version of quick invoice , for making your own invoices .

http://www.quick-invoice.com

And before a mod deletes this post , its not an illegal copy , its a demo version from the company free to download .

Had mine done at Carlton along with a cam belt change complete with full cam kit, was a very good price :)

Cam belt is 5 years or 72.

Had my Aux tensioner done the other week there too, Alex said changing the Aux belt isn't hard and only takes an hour I think.

Auxilary belt is a bumper off job - if you've got air con.

Maybe, but I swear Alex said it was only a quick job for him!

If when changing the tensioner the belt needs to come off (I'm an idiot so I guess that's obvious?) then looking at my bill it took half an hour :), and 50 quid for the little tensioner :(

That was on a mk1 172.

You can do it with the bumper in place Renault procedure is to take bumper and light of though.

Nope Alex did :p

It awas at Carlton Garage in Exmouth, ClarkieV6s very own.

tbh I've had cracking value every visit, my last service wasn't too bad either and that was 48k service, exhaust bracket replaced (the 20 quid renault one), aux tensioner replaced and two new Exaltos (15s) and change from £300 :)
