36k Service?

  Clio 172
Well having just spent the last 30mins reading posts on this topic and 15mins on the phone to the local stealers im still not much further on. Can someone clarify exactly what the service envolves.

My car is a 172ff 2003, i was quoted £185 for the service itself, then when i asked about the aux belt she said that the timing belt needs changes at either 72k or 5years which is soon. Will need both the timing belt and aux belt changed or is this just the same thing and im confused? Cheers:)

from what i gather the cambelt needs doing at 5 years or 72k so guess you could leave till next year

the aux belt should be done by (i think) 36k , so you could get away with just that but people tend to get them done at the same time because i think its still quite a job to change the aux belt so in the long run you save on labour costs.

this is my understanding anyway and im getting both belts changed tommorow all in 300 quid at a local garage.

Timing belt is the cambelt, and needs doing officially at 72k/5yrs, but a lot do it sooner for peace of mind. It's an allday job so is expensive. The auxiliary belt is a different item and runs a number of components (there's a pic on here somewhere) and is recommended to be changed at 36k.

Soooo, if your 36k and Aux belt are due, but your car is coming up to 5yrs, it does make sense to get the cambelt done as well. It's a bigger outlay now (£600+ at stealers) but saves money in the long run (the aux belt has to be replaced again when the cambelt is done) and gives extra peace of mind.

Spot on . Plus you'll need the spark plugs changing at 72k. Was that in with the quote at £185 ? It seems pretty cheap if it includes the plugs as well .

That seems cheap, I have read somewhere on here that getting it too cheap can be that the garage does'nt understand the job involved or does not have the correct tools...just be careful.

Ta, I'm learning :)

Won't be cos he was after a 36k service ;)

Lol, yeah . But the post is a little confusing . He's after info on a 36k service but as he said he's almost on 72k so he'll need the plugs changing as well as both belts ;)

Get your cheque book out mate

You don't say what mileage you are on, however I have a 2003 172ff myself, got to 35k in the summer, spoke to Mike @ Rentech, who is very well known on this site. Service was £250 (hence someone asking what you get for £185 as it is too cheap!) , with aux belt needing to be done at 36k at extra cost, and cambelt although not due until May 2008, could be done at the same time to save money and time on the job. Cannot remember the exact price but around £650 I think. For the convenience of sorting it early and not having to go back in May, I just went and had the whole lot done to be safe.

I'm at exactly the same point, and will do the same. 35400 miles but 5 yrs will be up in Sept next year.

Take it to a specialist - save £££s and get a better job done from experienced guys instead of some spotty Renault trainee....!

Anywhere you could recomend im in the Scottish Borders, looked at Gdi etc but its a long way just for a service.....

Wish i had sum extra notes and could get some tuning done at the same time but with it being xmas i cant see that happening.

How far is far for GDi?

I travel about 150 for Rentech in Portsmouth....

Worth it tho, avoids the spotty trainee taking it for a "test drive"!!

Had a quick look on google map and its pushing a 600 mile round trip.

Dont know of anywhere closer tho?

Yea RStuning could also be an option, need to have a proper think over what to do!

Cheers for the help though guys. ;)
