421/438 vs 197 cams

  RB Clio 182
Im not very clued up on cams, i own a clio 182, what are the differences in the above cams?

Are the 197 just as good as the 421/438 cams as an upgrade?

Also is there always a drop in torque lower in the rev range with the above cams fitted?

197 cams are only a small upgrade mate tho for the price of them ATM if u have to change ur t belt any time soon I would be fitting a set

The 197 cams are slightly more agressive than the 172/182 camshafts, and are fairly cheap 2nd.

The 421/438 cams are more agressive, and will offer more performance but cost a lot more.

Depending on the type of cams you choose, the cars state of health, the timing and who maps it will decide if it looses any torque somewhere, but a general rule of thumb is you will loose a little low down and gain up top, but it really does depend on what I stated above

Do you have to get the 197 cams mapped in or will they run on standard setup. I have a 172 whats due a belt so while its getting done i suppose there is no harm fitting a set of these. Wouldnt mind the group n cams K tec racing offer but abit pricey at £600. I use my car as a road car and the odd track day now and then. Whats people recommend?
Thought i would post up hear instead of starting a new thread.

The 197 only slightly improve the car on the standard inlet, they seem to work particularly well with the RS2 though.

Nothing like as powerful as 421s are.

RS Tuner map will cope with 197 ok as its a touch rich at the top end in the first place.

Is that with the 197 cams set on standard timing or inlet advanced chip? Reason I ask is I'm gonna throw a set in on the full grp n timing settings and use the genuine grp n ecu from Renault seeing as I've already got it.

With them advanced mate, I cant comment on how well a group N ecu will fuel it though as Ive not ever had one.

Assuming they are well mapped on the 172 cams, then you'd expect it a little lean at the top end on 197, not ideal.

Personally I would just install aftermarket so you can do the job properly TBH, but I must confess that tends to be my answer to almost everything as I cant see the point in modifying an engine and then not having proper control over it.

i'm running 421's. Power delivery is aggressive once you hit 5K :) Low down they are ok, but the 438's have been adjusted to work better at lower revs iirc. I'm happy with mine though. You won't notice a massive difference from Cams alone though imo

Already have the RON98 map. Could i see much improvement from a ported inlet and TB along with 197 cams with advancet timing?
There any info on here about the advanced 197 timing on a 172?

Ported TB will make about as much difference to power as a set of lexus rear lights.
