55 plate 172? is this right?

^agreed, a lot of parts on the car have dates stamped on them, so you could check when it was actually manufactured!

Personally i think the sellers talking b****cks . It all seems very fishy to me .

They stopped manufacturing 172's in December 2003 , so obviously you could still get 2004 models . They started manufacturing 182's in January 2004 and stopped production in October 2005 .

Where the hell he gets the idea that Renault told him you could still get 172's in March 2006 is beyond me . I struggled getting a new 182 in January 2006 , there was literally only a dozen left in the UK at that time .

Has to be a 172 as the 182 came with a different head unit:
The 182 Cabasse unit:

and the head unit fitted in the car:

I have herd its near impossible to so install these so has to be a late registered 172 probally imported as I can't see a nipple on the passenger window when I zoom into this picture:

In 2004, yes they did release a new Clio with better kit (not called the 182), but according to the posts in certain threads it is near impossible to upgrade to a newer style unit. Otherwise I would have an ipod adapter in my car!

stereo's between the 172/182 are the same, just one has a sticker!

182's started on 53 plates!
Yep that's the cross over reg, hence a few late reg'd 172's on 04 plates. The only 53 reg 182's i've seen were the press ones.

God knows about the blokes 55 reg 172 though, probs a late registered car that was put somewhere & forgotten about.

182's where released in January 2004 so you will see 53 plates about as they don't change to 04 until March 2004 .

Just what this bloke says about being able to get 172's up until March 2006 doesn't ring true  . Theres summat not right .

He's tried to make out it's only had some light front end damage " the car rear ended another car and the damage was bolt on parts to the front and the drivers airbag " which imo wouldn't get the car written of , if it was only panels .

It's defintely got 172 seats in it though .:S

I've emailed the seller anyway , to get a lowdown on the car and why he's saying it's a 55 plate 172 .

Well it was definitely registered first on the 1st of December 2005 .

The enquiry is complete
The vehicle details for YE55 OCJ are:

Date of Liability 01 04 2009

Date of First Registration 01 12 2005

I emailed him telling him it's not a cup (i'm bored) he replied saying it's got cup packs as stated on it's log book :S

edit: just put the numberplate into the rac checker and it comes up as a 172 cup!

lol, ive done that before :o

Its not a cup, its black!!

some sort of dodgy reshelling going on maybe? or just an honnest car that was left sat in the dock for a few years?

Anyone who has access to renault database i,e works in parts or knows someone who does will be able to tell u the dates and spec it was manufactured with

Something doesn't seem right with it?

Could still order 172s upto March 06?

Also the fact it was involved in an accident and is cat C or D.

I emailed the guy and this is what he told me :

" I did not say it was a uk car did i, the car was written off due to a gap insurance policy that was taken out from new by a miss T Cartwrite of telford in shropshire when she purchaded the car new in december 2005 from the dealer (simpledeal)
the damage was as stated i have pics before repairs were done and i have the original insurance companys enginneers report stating the damage and estimated cost of repair. "

So now we know . It is a 172 and was new in December 2005 . It looks like you could still get hold of them from abroad through companys like Simpledeal .

Sounds to me like its quite a dodgy motor as hes asking for P/X and accepting all sorts of different cars.
First was a 1.4 2004 Clio, Who would go from a 172 to a 1.4?
Then a megane scenic
then a 1.6 Golf.

Seems to me like hes trying to get rid of the car for a legit car so he can sell that.

I would have said that 04 maybe 54 at a push. 55 plate I doubt, as the last trophy was on an 06 plate.

Too many different factors here to even consider it, a black Cup thats been involved in an accident and now currently registered as a "c or d, i dont know i havent looked?" Even if you never had the slightest interest, you would still know this when selling.

I wouldnt give him £2000 for it

Sounds like DVLA had a spacktard working the day it was registered and they put all sorts of mistakes on the car's record!

Dont know what to make of this.

I know may RS fords were registered later than the normal date. But who knows with this.

Thing is if you check the numberplate it comes up as a 172 cup!

^ indeed my mate says he knows someone who has an escort cosworth unregistered sat in a storage compound somewhere!
I have also seen an XR3 cabriolet sell on ebay that had been bought in seperate parts from ford, built on someones driveway and completely unregistered! I would have thought that would have to be on a Q plate though as it would have no VIN!
