5th gear woes

  sold
Hi Chaps and Chappesses !
It's the first time i've posted so go gentle !!

I've got a problem with 5th gear. It started to crunch as I changed at pace, and the revs at which I can change into 5th without it crunching have got slowly lower and lower.

It's booked into Renault under warranty on the 3rd Nov, but I wondered if anyone else has had this and knows what the prob is.

Thanks all

53 plate 172 mate....done just under 16k Only got it in June and i didn't notice it when buying. Haven't been driving it too hard - honest !!! Although it does seem worse when box is cold.

A whole new box ? They wouldn't just replace the syncro ? Hah - listen to me...like I know what I'm talking about !!!!

Ignore this. I'm testing if it works. I tried once - first time - and it threw my reply away telling me I hadn't logged in, when I had.

I looked for a forum like this and joined up because I have the same problem, and I wanted to know if it was common and/or a known problem. Its a Clio Sport 172. Its only done 35,000 kms (a bit over 20,000 miles), and it hasn't been abused. Fifth gear synchro is weak. Renault are fixing it under warranty, but I'm definitely not getting a new gearbox. The kit coming from France (to Australia) has all the parts to do all the synchros, so hopefully they'll do them all, not just 5th gear.

The local Renault dealer says its not a known problem. I went on a long fast trip around the Australian outback in the heat of summer. About 12,500 kms in 10 days in temperatures up to 50 degrees C. When I got back I reported problems with it crunching going into reverse when warm. Then a bit later with it being hard to get out of 5th. Now it crunches going into 5th. They say the problems in getting out of 5th indicated the synchro ring was jamming, and now its worn out. We don't know it the crunching was an early sign of the problem, and whether maybe the long hot run in temperatures that a European car would not have been designed for or tested under cooked the gearbox oil.

I really wish I was getting a new gearbox because while 5th gear clearly has problems I reckon all gears are having the same problems to a lesser extent.
