6 speed 172 engine

Given the amount of work to the rear end as well (the beam on a mk1 is totally unsuitable for use with driven wheels) it would make more sense to just get something like a scooby which is relatively modular in construction, and then fit the front and back ends both from it, a bit like Specky who works for RS Tuning has done with a Corsa C.

Even thats a bit pointless though, as you may as well just leave the engine in the scooby shell which is better than a mk1 clio one anyway, but if you specifically want a 4wd mk1 (like me with my honda project it would make more sense in a civic but I just want a mk1 clio anyway) then thats a good way to do it.

The amount of money involved and time would be disgusting :headno:

I disagree on money, a rusty but working scooby, or a very tatty one, should be possible to score for a grand and have everything you need in it.

Time though, yeah definately!

Only if you can do all the work yourself though mate, theres still going to be a fair amount of fabrication involved amongst all the little silly things you find on your way.

Just to add...

you don't have all the nessisary(sp?) skills required and are relying on friends to help you out. Mark my words friends will only help you so far until they get fed up of helping and then your stuck without the correct skills (and knowledge presumably) with a car that doesn't work.

i also don't think you understand what's involved totally with an 02m conversion. Granted things are easier now there's a kit but there's still more to it.

4wd I'd love to see tbh so crack on, I will enjoy reading the updates until the inevitable

i think enough is said already but having done the 02m conversion i can tell you it's better not to do it in your case.
have you even done research? flywheel and adaptor plate is 550quid (still needs a clutch too), hyd. clutch conversion, custom mounts, custom speedo drive, custom driveshafts etc.....

however if you do decide to do it and make it 4x4 in the future then use the vag engine aswell. the transfer box won't fit with a renault engine...

And in fairness as chip says above, you'd be better of cutting up something already 4x4 & with potential.

You mean in terms of the back edge of the block and the transfer box casing wanting to occupy the same space?

That can certainly be a huge issue with selecting what 4wd system to use on which block!

We had it with my friends saab engine going onto my calibra turbo gearbox and transfer box, that wouldnt fit either but luckily was close enough he was able to just machine it slightly without making an actual hole right through!
