7k revs

  172 SPORT PH2
Lol, well my bro took the sport for a spin, though I was gonna die, and he was revving the tits off it ! I was like ahhh me car lol ,

  Focus RS Mk1
no it wont damage it, thats what the rev limiter is for but i wouldnt be hitting that all day every day, it wont be doing you any favours.

peak torque is before 7k on a std 172 anyway so no real need to hit the limiter.

Lmao, yea summate like that haha, he used to own a clio 172, he needed to feel the power again, lol he had 2k worth of damage to his car, inc engine and components as he constanly thrashed it

Does this damage the engine or gearbox, if going all the way to the max revs?

No. You'll probably notice an increase in oil usage, but as long as the car is healthy and looked after, it's not doing it much harm. It's not likely to make the engine last any longer though :D

And you still let him drive your car? Brave man!

As said, it'll be fine as long as it's not regular, it's well maintained and the engine has been allowed to warm up first.

Considering they die off after 6500 rpm it's a waste of time. I also dread to think of the noise the poor car is making:dapprove: To me a standard 172 taken over 5k sounds awful.

yeah 7k wont do it any real harm, as long as you warm it up properly, and you dont leave it at 7k lol

  182
so long as the oil is warmed through then there should not be any problems

i'd be more worried about the severity of the gearchanges tbh

  172 SPORT PH2
ah well i guess i dont need to worry, i just imagine the worst lol! well cheers neway lads!!! gonna get some pics up of it soon !

  Monaco RS Clio 172
engine'll be fine as above as long as it was warmed up to temp (oil too) for a good while before giving it the beans

gearbox however, big no no to rush them, they tend to do what the french do best and surrender themselves, leaving the gearbox oil all over the floor :)

You big girl :rasp:, to be fair though a standard one absolutely cries out for the next cog towards 7krpm.

Peak torque is 5250. Do you mean peak power at 6500, as you wouldn't want to change up at 5250?

  Monaco RS Clio 172
mine sounded ok @ 6.5-7k standard

then again my only thing to compare it to was my escort gti and that old zetec lump sounded like a bag of nails at 5k let alone 6k.. lol

filter + exhaust and now she sounds ok @ 6k on :)

Mine sounds like the opposite of a vtec, its all harsh and raspy up until 5k then it smoothes out and goes all throaty, bloody renault exhaust.

Why do you guys have 172's if you dont want to use all of the revs?

Of course the wont break! What a waste of car.

My first cup was abused on track and taken for epic blats every weekend without fail, was uber quick with a very healthy engine at 60k miles.

  Clio 172 RS2
Dies off after 6.5 thou... don't think so.
But then again peak torque is not at the top.

The F4R can handle those revs but i wouldn't recommend it on a daily basis.

you dont want prolonged use over 7200rpm (which it wont do as standard anyway) but 7k gear changes arnt going to do it any harm, but its past the powerband by then anyway, i change at 6800rpm as thats when mine is starting to tail off

I aren't sure about some of the comments in here. Surely they all rev to 7250rpm? Mine certainly does and it's factory standard. Granted, there's not much point in using all those revs, except if you're on track and need to hold a gear for a tad longer.

I think they sound alright all the way to the limiter.

Pointless exercise though, as said there's fook all above 6.5k rpm.

hey mark, iv only just noticed, your 'change before i blow up/v-tec y0/opitmum change light (lol) doesn't come on till approx 7700 rpm, does your ecu change the rpm the light comes onj, iirc you have an Rsport ecu?

+1

The limit it at 7.2k for a reason just like other car's have limits to stop engine's from wearing and going pop.

IMO the f4r enjoy's a rev but that does not mean bouncing off the limit each time. 6.5-6.8k is where standard max power is.

Yup. You'll find occasions on b-roads where you need to hold gears for a little longer too.

On my mums car a 325tds e36 one. When im insured to drive it its slow as hell and its restrictive. I rag the hell outta it for about a day and its like its loosened up and it more powerful afterwards. it pulls like a train after im done with it. My old arosa was the same it was drive slowly around town everyday, when i first got it was ok but then it loosened up after a good ragging. Obviously this is in no way scientific and i may be very very wrong but doen't a good ragging help a healthy engine. Not boucning off the limter or anything. Its funny though i drive my 1.5d 106 faster than my 172 lol.

Shouldn't damage the engine if its all warmed up nicely. My 172 gets revved hard all the time, never feels stressed and KTEC Stealth sounds mint. Feels like that's how it wants to be driven. I should give the gearbox an easier time though I think.

They feel much more unrestricted without the cat. I put mine back on not long ago ftl!

ah cool, i didn't realise they moved the light too, do you recommend the ECU?

Yes. Fills the mid range up a bit and gives the extended rev limit if as above, you need to hold a gear longer before a corner.

How many miles have you done with it like that so far?

Out of 107,500, about 105,000. Can't remember what it was like on the old one. I should take it along to the next rolling road day and try it out back to back as I've still got it.
