92 1.8 16V clutch or gearbox problems

  1992 Clio 1.8 16 valve
Hi there,

I had a problem with changing gear on my clio, it was hard to select a gear, and you had to really push the gearstick to change. I suspected it might be the clutch so have taken out the gearbox and clutch, leaving the engine in place. I cannot see any problems with the old clutch however, so is there any way I can test the gearbox with it off the car?

This is my first clutch change and has taken a very long time to get this far. I don't want to put everything back together with the new clutch only to find that the problem is still there and have to take the gearbox off again! Any advice on checking the gearbox would be helpfull!

Cheers

Sounds like the gearlinkage is not correctly adjusted. Remove this and then using the knurled bit on the gearbox select all of the gears! If this is easy to do then its the linkage. if its not sounds like the selector fork in the gearbox!

Allso I had probs with the actual cable once which was causing the clutch to not fully engauge.
Now your box is out,id change the clutch if you can afford one.

Thanks guys,

The gearbox oil wasn't silvery at all, just a nice healthy oily colour. Thanks for the offer of that gearbox lol_london, might take you up on that, but I will check my own gearbox out first.

Phantome46, should you be able to select gears easily by just grabbing the knurled bit by hand?

Tucks, I have a new clutch to fit, I couldn't find a problem with the old one, but I had covered it all in WD40 trying to get the clutch housing bolts out, so the clutch plates would have been ruined anyway.

I wondered whether the problem might be a worn synchromesh?

Cheers,
