A boring MPG thread but need some input....

  172 Phase 1 & 172 Ph
I am currently doing about 2000 miles a month, so took my 172 off the road and using my trusty Pug 106 diesel and getting around 60mpg BUT i'm sick to death of it, very slow, noisy etc....price you pay for economy i suppose!

I have 2 172's, a phase 1 and phase 2 in storage both sitting around doing nothing, mot's have expired etc and now the good weather is (hopefully) coming i'm seriously considering using one for work again but need to make sure i can run one daily without taking to much of a hit economy wise.

In the past i've never really given economy a thought when using the 172, as at the time it didn't matter....but things are a bit tighter now with a wedding on the horizon

So question is, what are you guys getting economy wise? any of you do mega mileage? what can you realistically get out of them on a good run and driving like a granny/sunday driver?

My deal at work is i get 25p per mile and £150 lump per month to cover wear and tear.

So for 100 miles i get £25....

Ideally trying to figure out how much my 172 will cost per mile to run....

Cheers
Gav

(ps; i know i could get it on the road, find out myself etc but need to some real figures before i got swapping insurance policies over)

you would easy get 400 miles + to a tank

tbh these engines are great on fuel lol... i love the money saved compared to anything else i have owned

  Golf GT & A4 Avant
I used mine for work for quite some time, commute was 40miles per day of A road, then 20 - 40miles per day town and B road driving. without trying and enjoying the odd trip I would easily average 36 - 38mpg and 350 miles per tank.

I was getting 40p per mile but no lump sum. got married and gave up on owning a nice car, sold it and bought the wife a new Focus. Now I'm in a Mk4 Golf TDI, 50mpg and an impressive 90bhp (as new book figure so probably half that now) and it's demoralising but saving me a fortune. I was building up approx 600miles of claimable mileage and it wasn't worth keeping the 182 and running it into the ground

Slooooow A Roads and 6 mile trips, about 280 to a tank average (bout 30MPG)... Granny driving round M25 from time to time, 40MPG...

you can get a bit more power out of that engine matey... remap with 110bhp injectors will see 135 ish bhp... different turbo and intercooler 150 ish ;)

I'm a little disappointed with the mpg in my 182 compared to my ph1 172. It seems to be about 5-7mpg worse off.

  Clio 182 FF
My average in my 182 is 34MPG.

So doing 100 miles @ 34MPG uses 2.94 gallons = 13.37 litres.

You get £25 for 100 miles; so 13.37 litres needs to cost less than £25, or that's less than £1.87 per litre.

My local Shell charges £1.409 for V-Power, so those 13.37 litres would cost £18.84, giving you £6.16 change from your £25.

  172, Focus
My Ph2 172 is currently on 35mpg, highest I've had it is 37.8 and that is on over a range of 2000 miles since the trip was reset.
I drive on B roads mainly.
Honestly don't think you can beat a RS 1*2 for MPG/fun factor.

I would say a fair average for me in the 172 is 39MPG, I mostly do longer runs and minimise short runs though. This includes blasts and a bit of fun, then trundling around at 1.6k - 2k whenever there's any traffic about. The highest I've squeezed out on a trip is a smidge under 44 MPG, which was a 70ish mile drive from Mid West Wales to South West Wales. I nearly took a photo :p. mind I was being a boring c**t by the end of it, avoiding 43 as if it were the plague, can't have been good.

100 miles @ 39MPG @ £1.40 per litre is £16.32

Even if you floored it a lot and did short trips and got 30MPG out over her instead, that would be less than £21.50 per 100 miles.

Cheers guys good to see some real life actual figures, anything above 35 i can live with. So decision made the phase 1 will be hitting the road asap after 19 months of not moving....It will be nice to get to some meets again, although the dreaded cambelt/dephaser is coming up...

Ah go for it! Will make driving around for work a much more enjoyable experience :D. I hope you manage to get it back on the road without too much hassle.

LOL it's probably not worth the hassle, it's just about to hit 140K so ready for its 2nd cambelt, dampers are bouncing all over the place so I've bought a full set of GT TDI springs and dampers, new top mounts and bushing will be going on as well. and to top it off, I'm pretty sure the dual mass fly wheel is on its way out. It's costing more to keep this in working order than it would have done keeping the Clio, so spending it on tuning I don't think it will cope

I've had the last 8 years in 5 GT Turbo's and 1*2's and have found the limits of the Golfs grip all too quickly.

In all honesty I wouldn't want to be doing that sort of mileage again in a car like the RS Clio's it's just a costly waste of a car

To be honest I used to get excited about getting in the 172 even it was just popping to the shops, now i enjoy driving the other halfs micra! as an upgrade from the diesel....As for the phase 1 it needs a windscreen (huge crack), two tyres and a battery so not to bad.

@ yellow dave

I found my mk4 golfs I owned ( 2x v6 4 motions and 1 R32) the most expensive to run and I have owned an M3 , rs turbos, an rx7 etc....
