A few problems

  Clio 182 cup
Hi guys,

I've started to accumulate a few problems with my 182 and was wondering if anyone could offer some advice as to what is wrong.

1) Every so often car refuses to start first time and this is only ever in the morning. It doesn't do this every day but ALWAYS starts second time round. Any days where it does start first time it seems to struggle more than normal and only just manages to fire first time. What could this be??

2) Clutch pedal has developed a clicking noise as i'm bringing my foot back up off the pedal. When in slow moving traffic this is worse. At the top of the pedal travel there is a slightly louder clicking noise as I take my foot off the clutch. Is this a fault with the pedal mechanism??

3 ) Exhaust doesn't sound right, and i've noticed if I look under the car there seems to be gas escaping somewhere around the join to the Cat, but not 100% on this (i'm certainly no mechanic!!). Also the tailpipes seem to puff/cough every couple of seconds or so at idle, doesn't seem to be any more fumes pushed out, just the noise I can hear. The car now seems to have periods where it holds back more and accelaration isn't its usual. Other times it seems perfect but exhaust noise doesn't.

Sorry for the long post but I'll get a better response from this forum than I ever could with Renault. I will probably look to book it in with a specialist for a full checkover but in the meantime any ideas?

Cheers

At a guess, I would say all those problems, except the clutch, are connected.

Poor running can be caused by the O2 sensor/s in the cat and down pipe.
Have any of the dash lights shown up ??

The 2 guys on here who will help you are Edde and Fred, both professional motor techies, I'm sure they will be along in a mo.

Your clutch pedal, could just need lubricating.

No lights Brian but I have had the o2 sensor replced by Renault 2 months ago. Emissions light came on and this was diagnosed as the fault and replaced. No problem since. Could this be fitted incorrectly and part of the problem?

Possible, but tbh, Renault would/should know which is the right part.
Thats more a problem with independents when they fit a "universal" sensor.

The exhaust gas escaping from that cat sounds bad, that needs checking.

Any ideas on the starting issues, could this have anything to do with the o2 sensor or is this likely to be something else?

Mine was like this starting, I had new spark plugs, coil packs and leads and the water temp sensor all done under warranty and it still did it.

It's stopped now since I got a house with garage.

But maybe try a new TDC sensor.

Try turning the key till the lights on then off then start the car, normally starts better that way.

They all seem to idle poor and it sounds normal from what your saying.

You got any warranty?

Exhaust blow will be down to the cat to middle section joint the joint comes loose and the exhaust blow,

Clutch pedal sounds like the self adjusting mech is adjusting to much

Cold start could be down to a TDC sensor.

I have got remaining warranty but to be honest I've not had a good time with Renault in the past and i'd sooner put it in with a specialist and pay for peace of mind that its sorted out properly. My car came out damaged after it went in for an o2 sensor change:mad:

I've tried the key tip Dan and it doesn't seem to help in my case. With regards the clutch, I remember reading about someone who had the ratchet mechanism replaced on their clutch for a similar prob to mine could this be causing the clicking?

TDC seems to come up a lot on here too so I'm wondering if mine is in need of changing. Thanks for the help guys.

Fred, Edde and suggestions guys?
