a guide to tinting lights with tint spray

  172 cup- suzu rf600r
hey guys, after a couple of years in a leon cupra r and a beemer iv decided to go back to my first sporty car, the mighty 172 cup, anyway i was looking on here for pics of tinted rear lights and came accross loads of posts of people asking how easy/hard it is to tint lights with spray so i thought id copy the guide i made on seatcupra.net, and once i do the clio lights il post up a couple of pics of that too ;)

go here to see - http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=260190 if you look further down youl see what i finally did with the lights, and anyone with pics of their tints i would like to see as im not sure exactely what im going to do yet, start with a light smoke i guess!

Got a spare pair myself im going to have a blast with when I pick up a can of tint spray :) masked off certain sections of the lights to se what kind of effect it will give too :)

Is it just me who thinks this looks mega chav?

It's also just begging to be pulled over

lol no its not just you mate, i think the first all over spray looked a bit chav which is why i redid it, i was happy in the end but its not to everyones taste, for getting pulled over there are legals you can stick to, for rear lights its something like 50 percent of all lights must show and the reflector shouldnt be tinted (unless you add an untinted one on the bumper or whatever)

anyway wee update on my clio - i did tint the lights (no pics im afraid) but decided it didnt look quite the way i wanted so i ordered a flyeyes kit instead which im in the process of putting on right now, iv done the rear lights and the side repeaters so far and as soon as the rain is off il be doing the front lights and fogs, il try get some pics up tonight.

the tints ended up a bit matt for my taste and using the flyeyes keeps you bang on the right side of the law, once i get the pics up let me know what you all think!

dunn - ye it was stupid not to remove the lights first time lol, but thats what happens when no thoughtful person puts up a guide for others! on the clio the rears were super easy to come out, bit more hassle on the leon, im just going to fit the flyeyes on the front with the lights in place though - no masking needed

please ignore the mess of the car she is crying for a wash! and the black front badge wasnt me and will be redone soon

*edit* if your buying the kit - i bought 2 sheets which was plenty, i even have enough left to do my bike! one sheet wont do front and rear though, 2 defo needed

according to the manufacturer it doesnt adversly affect the light output but i would take that with a pinch of salt, looking at the lights when they are on they seem to be just as bright, but i will need to go for a couple of night drives to decide, from last night i think the headlights dont shine quite as brightly on the road but if there is a difference its small as im really not sure there is actually a difference lol! a search of other forums throws up mixed opinions as to whether there is any difference, id say just try it and see but i do think im going to put in brighter bulbs just in case, il need to wait for MOT time to see if it distorts the beam pattern at all but everything i read says it doesnt.

i got it from flyeyes.co.uk and was around £25 for 2 sheets, that comes with a scalpel and smoothing pad too, took me about an hour and a half to do all the lights including third brake and side repeaters, there are videos on the flyeyes site showing how to apply which takes that guy about 3 minutes per light but hes obviously a pro, all the lights were easy to do except the headlights because of the sharp curve around the side, this made the film crease a bit so i cut out a pizza slice on each outside corner and it went on flat, if you go to within a foot you can see the line but you do have to be that close.

i think it pretty much peels off so i would say for that price and easy(ish) application just try it, i think maybe the blue would have been cooler on mine though

You may laugh about this, me and DMS have a little friend that did this with his mums tights on an old escort. I ribbed him for days saying it was s**t then he took them off just to shut me up.

How does the wearing of your mums smelly gussetted old tights aid in spray painting car lights, and why did he keep wearing them after he'd finished?

I once saw a Boxster (pre first face lift) with tights stretched across the rear lights - couldn't believe it
