A little advice needed about degreasing and buying parts...

  AB182, Audi A5 3.0
Hi everyone,

Iv just stripped my old engine (D7F engine) to bits as it was broken. Before putting it back together id like to make everything look as clean/new as possible, which is the best product to use to make this happen?

Also the problem with the engine was the big end bearing shells, completely worn! Where do you go about buying bearing shells?

Thanks in advance, TF.

good man for stripping the engine, hope it was educational.
The best way to get parts really clean is with a good degreaser and one of those specialist vibrating baths. iirc there are some other specialist chemical cleaners too. Not sure about sandblasting, it wouldnt be suitable everywhere.
Sure someone else will have a better suggestion.:)

majority of us just use a parts cleaning tank which is just a solvent de greaser works a treat and you can clean any thing with it!!i clean out turbo boost pipes with it all the time and the cars dont take off lol so it wont do any harm

My mate soaked his bottom end in vinegar. Came out spotless after a few days of soaking.

When i did mine, i used petrol and a stiff brush :)

Are you joking about the vinegar?! lol

Thanks for the replys relating to the degreasing, any brand names to look out for?

still need to find out where to get the bearing shells? Is renualt the only place that *may* sell them? or maybe the shells are only made in certain sizes?

Im not in a major rush for this stuff as i already replaced the engine about a year ago (or more); just fancied seeing what a piston looked like really lol and thought i might as well fix the old engine at the same time...

has the worn shells worn the crank??if so u may have to have the crank ground slightly and oversized shells possiby but dont quote me on that as depends on the extent of the damage to the crank

Nope. Some pics to show

lol thats amazing, im going to put a small part in vineger now to see what it looks like 2moz, and then i might have to go shopping! lol

^^ it get's rid of rust a treat too.

It's really violent stuff. It's made me think twice about putting it on chips again.

Cheaper the better BTW

ok iv put some small bits in the vineger (the bits that hold the crank shaft in place), i'll post some pic's 2mos to show how they turned out! The vineger im using was pretty cheap iirc... Its a good thing i like the smell of vineger lol.

BTW iv already used gunk on all the parts and put the whole engine through the dishwasher (but that didnt take off everything), so its only the real old/hard stuff thats left on the parts now.

  Clio's
an ultra sonic parts cleaner is good for this type of thing and its safe to put almost anything inncould be expensive though

i used brake cleaner on much of my focus engine i recently rebuilt, but yea, 2 second an earlier post, you need to discover why the shells were worn, and wether thats damaged the crank, if your rebuilding to keep it'd be worth getting it fitted and correctly balanced. mine wasn't worth it, i bought a new engine from a scrappy :( FTL
good luck m8!

Its worn because it ran out of oil :S , i originally thought it was because the pick up pipe had broken off but its ok, i guess the iol sensor wasnt working at the time. Im going to post some really large pics of the crank later to show how worn it is... maybe someone will be able to tell me ifits worn beyond repair? The engine still ran when it broke, but it made a very loud clatering sound and had very little power (max speed i could go was like 40mph).
