A proper remap.

  BG Clio 182
Basically, I have an Apple Mac computer and for several other reasons don't fancy really mapping my car myself (rs tuner).

I therefore would probably rather take it somewhere and get it done properly. I'm based in selby.

The car is a 182 with a scorpion rs192 exhaust with mid silencer delete and janspeed high flow cat. It's also got a Ktec induction kit. Engine wise, this is the full extent of its modifications.

I've noticed a teeny flatspot before 4k revs which admittedly it's always had but which has been accentuated by the new exhaust alterations.

Would a remap sort this lot and how much power increase should I see from this little lot?

Also, where should I take it to get the most out of my car and my money? And if I got an independent to do it, would they improve the idle and slightly raise the limiter like the rs tuner does?

Because its a generic one and every car is different?

If you've got a standard car, your car should be near enough identical to every other 172/182. In which case an off the shelf map is fine... Do you think every 182 ECU has different maps when they leave the factory?

If you've done some modifications that give you more headroom in a certain area than a standard car then fair enough. Otherwise just stick with what's been proven to work (RS Tuner).

No, all cars have a generic map from factory, that's one of the reasons people have a car mapped, to get rid of flat spots etc.

A generic map will never be as good as a custom one fact! As I have already said, every car is different!

I'm sure a specialist will be along soon to tell you this too.

I am not saying a rstuner is s**t, its just not as good as a custom map would be.

But all the OP has modification wise is and induction kit and exhaust which is what most people have on their cars, I have a V6 airbox, matched inlets and a decent exhaust which is essentially a standard car really, which is why I went for an RST because for the very limited power mods it has it made the most sense, a garage could spend hours fiddling with a custom map and only squeeze 1 or 2 bhp more than a generic map and it's cost you nearly twice as much, i've been on rolling road days where cars with the same mods and generic RST maps have made very different power because as has been said all cars are different, so just because it's a generic map doesn't mean it's not going to make good power and just because it's a custom map doesn't mean it's going to unlock more power than an incidental car with an RST.

I Dout you'd tell a difference on a near standard car between an rs tuner and a custom map, yes the custom map is bespoke to your car but it's not worth the extra £££
If you start changing cams and adjustments to timing then yes get a custom map but if not then stick to the rs tuner

Its not all about power, its safety too, making sure everything is running sweet, im not saying an rstuner is bad, they are meant to be brilliant.

Mapping is a ruddy minefield. In some ways a generic map that has a bigger safety margin to cover production and basic mod tolerances can be safer than entrusting your car to someone that has no prior experience of a particular engines way of producing power and how it responds to air fuel ratios. If only it was as simple as throwing as much advance as the engine will stand and chucking in settings for a best power air/fuel ratio.

A good mapper will always map it safely, im sure chip said that the 5k kick isn't such a kick, but more of a s**t standard map which causes a dip in power just below 5k rpm.

You said it right there. A good mapper!

It's not s**t. It just doesn't ignore the Lambda sensor until after 5k. Well 4.8k according to renaults technical documents. I'm sure Renault has their reasons for doing so. Probably that for best power you'd be up there anyway not trying to drive it like a diesel. I am suprised they didn't tell the ecu to ignore the Lambda under full throttle at any rpm.

I agree with everything in here. I just want the car to drive like it should. After the sports cat went on it feels dead below 3.5k now a real flatspot so want something that'll map it out.

I'll probably go rs tuner, I just feel something made in Hungary somewhere can't fully cater for my car sat on my drive with very differing modifications to everyone else if you get me?

Henk that owns Fastchip used to work for Renault writing their OEM maps, so I wouldn't worry about it not being a proper map.

No mate I know he's great he's amazing and his map seems wonderful I just don't understand it's 'blanket' effectiveness if you get me? I am gonna go for it though.

How much difference do you get before the 4.8k kick? Does it allow full use of the modifications I have bestowed on my little clio?

It completely smoothed out the 5k kick in mine and gave it some balls from 1-5k where before it had nothing,
you know Henk can write you a custom map tailored to your car based on the data logging you can do with the RST?

  Pug 206 SW, 172 CUP
Before 4.8k it uses the Lambda sensor to trim fuelling. Your sports cat may have put the standard map out of the range it can cope with.

The standard map is completely biased towards emissons and fuel consumption before the kick and even runs this under heavy throttle openings again until the kick. This causes a lean running situation which your sports cat has most likely worsened.

The RS tuner map will have been modified to cope with mods and should have an option available to it to cope with it. It will also have been tweaked for best performance under heavier throttle openings at all rpm.

If your not sure then e-mail them.

A custom map is only as good as the mapper doing it. There us a reason why some mappers on here are well thought of. They can extract things from an F4R that others can't.

Cheers

To be fair, and in conclusion to this thread I decided to go to RS tuning and get a proper remap. I'll attach the graph but I'm sure it speaks from itself.

I don't personally believe an RS Tuner map is anywhere near as good tbh as the amount of times he tweaked it and amount of power runs proved the base map just didn't cover as much as could be gotten out of the engine.

The car ran 172 and after the first map, the base map, about 176. So I gained additionally to that another 7bhp proving how much better the proper map is so to speak. When you're not going mad with power I thought I'd be best to make the most of what I had so was dead happy with pretty much 183 bhp, with exhaust mods and an induction kit!
