A quick guide for colour coding

  172 ph2
Ive not been using cliosport for long and ive noticed the same question poping up all the time, ''how do i colour code my door handles?'' ''how do i colour code my door strips?'' any how i pm'd a kid last week with a few tips so ive decided to post them up.

First you need to key the plastic with a red scotch brite (looks like a pan scruber)

Then you need a plastic primer and a normal primer, apply 1 or 2 coats of plastic primer (the plastic primer is just a clear solvent that makes the normal primer stick) then leave it to dry for 10 minutes then apply the normal primer usually 3 or 4 coats(leave between coats untill flashed off about 10-15 minutes or use a hair dryer)and leave over nite.

Flat the primer with 1000 grit wet and dry paper with warm soapy water(fairy liquid type stuff) until nice and smooth,if need be apply more primer and leave to dry.

Once the plastics are smooth put them on some card board buy a few tins of paint and clear laquer from halfords. Before painting put the tins in hot water this helps the paint go on nice.If halfords only have 1 tin off colour just buy a simler colour and use this on the first 2 coats and finish with the last 2 coats with proper colour.

Apply each coat of colour nice and even,Dont be putting it on thinking it will stay shiny because it will dry matt,Once you have the first 2 coats on you can leave to dry for 30 mins or heat up with the hair dryer then give them a quick flat, this does'nt really need doing only if they feel a bit bitty, then apply the last 2 coats the same, leave for 30 mins, make sure they are covered and clean(not dusty and full of bits)then apply the clear laquer(4 coats) the first and second coat can go on a bit dryish if you want then the last 2 coats can be put on wet.

Then leave over nite in a warmish room then polish with t-cut (not that coloured stuff) use the one for laquered finishers this is a little less harsh.

better using filler primer on plastics as its quicker to get a better result.

G6 rapid cutting compound works better than tcut as it gives a smoother finish, and the shine can be easily brought back with poorboys professional polish or something similar.

and halfords lacquer really is second best compared to something like U-Pol clear coat.

its just a novice guide,id use g3 as im a painter but for people doing it on a budget they mite have a bottle of t-cut in there shed,as for the laquer 1k is all crap to be honest.filler primer?normal primer thats what i was talking about!!didnt want people to mistake me for that grey plastic primer.

Do you really need primer on plastics iv always just sanded them smooth painted and laquered seems to come out okay?? I keep meaning to write a guide for the wheels as iv taken loads of pictures of the process etc.. Just havnt got round to it

should always primer plastics yup, i only bother plastic primering big stuff like bumpers, small things like bump strips and door handles i just use normal primer (cellulose or 2k).

if you dont use any primer, the paint will look dirty and off colour

you dont "need" one. it just promotes addhesion.

on something so small as door handles, aslong as its prepped well beforehand, plastic primer isnt needed at all.

its all fine until you get a stone chip or scrape on the moulding then it will start to shed its paint like a snake sheds its skin

g3 and then g10 if you want a proper job. there is quite a difference between 1k lacquer and the different brands - for instance acrylic lacquer gives a shite finish. and as for 'normal' primer - youve got filler primer, etch primer, conventional primer, plastic primer, and plastic filler primer. plus other primers for high temperature usages.
