a wee pop and a funny smell! help

  Ly Megane 230 F1
Just chamged my rear discs and bearings so went to take the car out for a test run.

Went to pull off in first, not a slow take off to be honest but not a wheel spinning one either..then all I heard was a wee pop and it jamp out of first gear so I quickly put it into second and pulled away.

There was a smell of clutch/gearbox after this happened but the car still goes into every gear ok and there is no clutch slipping through out the rev range?

Should I be worried?

i have driven the car about 30miles since this has happened and there is still a faint smell of clutch/transmission kinda smell..? i havent noticed any direct changes to the way the car drives.
going from 5th to 4th or 4th to 3rd makes a slight wee clonk but only when in high revs
it sounds like a very very faint whine in 1st and 2nd when taking off..its that faint that the stereo has to be off, windows up and you have to listen for it.

i am panicking a wee bit since the smell wont go away!

Check that gaiter, where it bolts to the box and the other end of the boot with the clip on it where the driveshaft goes through it

id there was a leak between the gears and the area where the clutch is...am i right in saying the clutch would be slipping?

No as the bell housing protects the clutch plate. Only way that can get contaminated is a crack in the gearbox casing or oil leaking through the flywheel bolts if they havent had thread lock/seal on them. It can get out that gaiter you photo'd if its torn or come away from the gearbox itself. This gearbox isnt like most others, where the drive shaft goes through a seal seated in the box itself, the clio has a joint that goes into the diff and oil sealing is performed by that gaiter.

A picture of the a shaft probably explains better than I can:
