Abandoned 172

Whilst doing my rounds delivering shopping the other morning I came across what appeared to be an abandoned house so being me I had to go back and have a look which is exactly what I did earlier. Pull up and straight away I see a silver 172 with a cliosport.net sticker in the back window. And also a renault 5 lurking in the background. According to the mot history the car has around 60k on it and as been sat for 11 years. I'm considering doing a f4r swap on my non sport clio as I fancy another interesting project when my triumph is finished, question is would this be worth considering as a doner car for that [emoji848]

@K4M_clio is that true? I've seen people swap them into Dci shells. Mind you they didn't have sunroofs. @Greeny. Agreed it looks rough but the interior is mint, rear beam looks good, all the front end is good just wasn't able to check the engine. @Adeyspec I agree with you there! If I can get some info I will. Apparently the guy has not long sold an E30 M3 there.

It failed its last Mot on about 3 minor things mileage was just over 60k!! Interior is very good no wear on the drivers seat even the steering wheel looks good.

According to a local I spoke with many years ago part of the building used to be a shop which caught fire. After that the house part was extended into the shop. Several years on the owner put in planning for development which the council refused and he parked all his old cars there to p*ss them off. When his parents died he inherited their house just down the road and is apparently living there and will come back here to collect his post. He also own a barn which is full of cars too.

My mate bent 2 shells. He creased the roof at the B pillar because he had a 285bhp engine with coilovers in a 1.2 8v shell with a sunroof and because he drives like a f**king maniac on steroids. Honestly he makes a dCi 80 clio feel dangerously quick

I've not doubt the council couldn't give the first f**k about his collection of rotten cars, probably completely unaware it's even there.

Would you say a standard f4r would work in a sunroof shell then? Would understand why it couldn't take the 285bhp lunacy aha

Aye he had it NA for about a year and it was fine on the road. It was when he really started giving it a lot of hammer on track

I'm sure he managed to smash a sunroof but I could be wrong about that bit😂😂

Surely not, wouldn't have thought the single skin of sheet metal that is cut out to install the sunroof is structural?

I seem to remember valvers were prone to rippling around the sunroof too

I've got 212bhp F4R in my mk1 with sunroof and yes they are prone to rippling but it's fine and has been for years. On track, with 500lb springs, full slicks etc. The chassis are plenty strong enough for any engine

Not that I’d do it but I do remember a few threads over the years where people just apply for logbooks of these abandoned cars and take them.

One chap got an escort cosworth on PF. There was also a Honda S2000 amongst other replies.

A logbook isn't proof of ownership though, so it's still theft technically

As they have said above, that R5 looks interesting and the 172 is probably good for spares. I would like to look around there too.

Maybe but I'd rather do the conversion to my shell as its in better nick plus id like build something a bit different and prove to myself that i can do it. Yes it probably wont be worth much but i dont plan on selling up anyway.

That man is very lucky to have found the escort! The chap is still about and has sold an e30 m3 from there quite recently.

Pretty sure it was a legit move if it’s been abandoned. Well a few people had done it. Sure they had to apply and the DVLA try contacting the owner, can’t remember exactly. Have to try and find the thread as it really rubbed a lot of RS enthusiasts up the wrong way.

I mean good on him for having the audacity to do what he did, but he’s effectively stolen a car.

would be epic if in 5 years time big Tyrone is released from Wormwood Scrubs, tracks him down and stoves his head in whilst taking his £15/20/30k or whatever he sold the car for.

The interesting thing is IF someone did come out of prison & want it back they probably wouldn’t be able to claim it back as the DVLA won’t release the details will they?

Makes you wonder though, I’ve bought loads of cars without receipt of purchase. If the V5 isn’t proof of ownership, what actually is? Probably having the car in your possession without accusation of theft would be the biggest one.

How do you prove a car is legally yours if it’s been taken like this and the v5 isn’t proof of ownership? Isn’t that line on the V5 more to cover financed cars?

My money is on there being more to the story in the first place. Ford enthusiast gets an escort cossie... in my mind it was always something along the lines of a car that the owner died and it was known by a trader/mechanic etc. Maybe even stored somewhere unknown to his Mrs etc and someone in the loop claimed it.

It's abit of a grey area, because yes it is technically owned by someone else, surely though they would need proof of ownership.
A sales receipt or something, because just being the previous name on the V5 is by definition not proof you were the owner.

There was a Lotus Elite abandoned in the centre of Newark not long ago, I half considered trying the same thing, but then looked up the value and saw they were not worth the effort.

For me I think it shouldn’t be allowed. First of all how do you define a car being abandoned. No MOT, tax and insurance whilst parked on a public highway is pretty much the only way. Even then the vehicle is owned by somebody and taking something without their consent is stealing. I always keep a dated and signed receipt for the cars I buy with the previous owners details as ‘proof of ownership’

I think the police would take a dim view of someone taking someone else goods then applying for registration. There is an abandoned vehicle process for cars in public highways.

Then there is proper process for it to be removed. Including notification procedure. I believe it would also need to be disposed of at market value (like an auction) so if any future challenge over the vehicle the audit trail can show how it was sold and the costs attributed to it. However if a vehicle is on private land then it can’t really be abandoned, unless it’s dumped there by the owner illegally.

But the police didn’t care in respect of the cosworth thread. The fact is it was ‘stolen’ and crashed and the guy even collected it from the police impound before it was even in his possession.

As far as an abandoned vehicle goes you can apply and if the DVLA see fit that the owner is awol and unresponsive then it’s yours to claim.

I’d imagine the alternative is one day the council collect it and it gets scrapped.

Well there is a proper procedure to follow, the cars don’t get scrapped unless generally they are deemed only fit for. Otherwise they are disposed of via auction.

It looks like they try and contact the last known keeper through the DVLA, so if at that point someone had registered their name as the keeper they would be contacted, they would have to deal with any fines and if they run the risk of police investigation if the car had been involved in a crime. Either way just slapping your name on the log book is a risky process. If the real owner later finds their car is not there and reports it stolen, then they could be prosecuted for theft. Regardless of someone on the internet claiming they got themselves a free car, I would think in my experience it’s a pretty risky and immoral way to take someone else’s property.

Edit: the police wouldn’t care until someone reports the car as stolen. But as mentioned previously having a log book is not an indication of clear title.
