Not that I’d do it but I do remember a few threads over the years where people just apply for logbooks of these abandoned cars and take them.

One chap got an escort cosworth on PF. There was also a Honda S2000 amongst other replies.

Wish I had thought of that wouldn't mind an s2000!!

If the owner wants to fill the yard with rotting cars, how about offering to swap the 172 with whatever is cheapest on FB/gumtree/ebay?

There was a Lotus Elite abandoned in the centre of Newark not long ago, I half considered trying the same thing, but then looked up the value and saw they were not worth the effort.
