Abandoned Vehicles Thread.

Not so much abandoned but dumped in the most random place! went to wales at the weekend and decided to go 4 a walk with my dad and check out the disused mines on the hillside, 1st pit we came across had these in there! lol the pit was a good 40-50ft deep. think the blue car is a vauxhall viva, there was a 1966 mini and a couple of other unrecognisable cars and a van wich i think was a mk2 escort van! not sure how they ended up there but were well and truly stuck!

We found an old lotus elan next to our new unit. Land owner said its been there 5 years and it was left by a previous tenant. The Tenant was unable to trace the owner and we have saved it from being scrapped. I think due to its fibreglass body its worthless as scrap so its a lucky car! We are going to get the owner details from the DVLA. If we cannot find the owner to give them a storage bill I am going to restore it :D

Kev

Don't forget that when you contact the DVLA, you will become the registered Keeper, NOT the owner!

as long as I make reasonable effort to find the owner or they do not want to pay the storage charge then I am the legal owner.

If you find them, and they sign teh car over to you then yes your the owner.

If you don't find them, they can come out of hiding and demand teh car back provided they have proof that the car was originally theirs.

DVLA deal with whoever the Keeper of the vehicle is, as stated on the front of every V5 (c)

The question of ownership is down to law and proving you have / had owership.

Chances are you will be fine as the owner of teh Lotus will have passed on and wont be able to contest!

EDIT: Also I think if you can prove possession of an item for 5/7 years you can clain legal ownership

I know you simply cannot rock up and take an abandoned vehicle, but I have the vehicle physically and can justify charging a fee to the owner for storage and return of the vehicle. I have to prove reasonable effort to find the original owner. This includes paying the DVLA for the last known details. If this person is dead/missing/moved its going to be easy. I can claim ownership and it would be very hard to legally get it back off me. If the person is still there then they can make the decision of what they want to do. Thats basically what the DVLA say. I would not bother claiming for the V5 until this process is done.

I don't know if were just at cross purposes.

You pay the DVLA for the previous owners details. If they don't responded the DVLA can make you the registered Keeper.

If the guy is abroad, doesn't respond, comes back in two years he can still claim ownership.

Re: The Aston Martins - We had a site down south somewhere (can't quite remember where it was now!) that was basically an old airfield with hangars. Aston had rented a few buildings off us to store lots of cars. There was this huge, mostly derelict site with one or two buildings tucked away ram packed full of brand spanking new Astons. Never got to go down there myself but it was legendary at our place.

Also legendary was when we were bought by a bunch of asset stripping French b******s their board headed down there and took a few "samples" out for a spin. Apparently Aston were absolutely livid.

Dunsfold Aerodrome (where they film Top Gear) is full of warehouses filled with old cars and there's so many firms who repair/restore old cars in there. Next time i'm in there i'll take a picture of some of them!

found out last week why the lotus I have was abandoned. Head gasket has gone in a big way. Lovely watery oil round the engine and water system.

That's awesome. Are you sure you didn't just come across an undiscovered car crash? lol

Got some of a few pugs, some are still being used but some clearly aren't, they're on the camera though so will get them up in a few days.

Knows. Most cars have black plates with silver numbers, looks awesome! Also sorry about the auto correct that I never noticed on your name!

Why is the door lock attached to the rear wing? Tbh though most of them will have ended up like that so I'm not surprised.
