ABS light and Steering wheel judder (coupled with a loud droning noise)

  2004 1.5 DCi 80 Dyna
It sounded expensive!!

It doesn't do it every time, road driving is usually okay but when I would drive at least 10 miles and come to a slow point, a mega judder comes through the steering wheel and a droning sound from the front wheels. I am thinking warped discs, any ideas?

If I drive on a straight and let it glide, there is no obvious breaking or pulling to one side, although when you start from standstill, there is a high pitch squeak from the wheels.

If it is seized brakes, does that mean the discs will need replacing too?

Does sound like your discs from the description. If its the pads seizing on the disc then I'd say you need to take a look at the disc face to see what damage has been done. If it's a warped disc then obviously they'd need changing.
It's not a difficult job to jack the car up a little and spin the wheels by hand see if you can detect where the squeal is coming from or if you feel resistance at certain points as the wheel spins. Or take the wheels off and take a look at the disc face.

took it to my local garage, he has driven it and doesn't think it's the discs, he said the pads are a bit warn and found it to be intermittent on grinding on the rolling road. They are going to look over it tomorrow. If it's just the pads then I'm looking at £35 fitted, pads & discs about £80 but hopefully the discs are fine.

Good luck with it! Don't suppose its bearings or CV .... I've had a really dry CV that squealed like a b**ch but wouldn't cause the judder through the wheel..

Turned out to be the inside pads had totally worn through, just a slither of pad (which fell off when they took the brakes apart!!). Fortunately the discs are fine and it only cost £30.
