ABS

Ok, so Im currently looking for a Valver.. and the nice ones dont have ABS, the ones which do are either sold or I just dont like them.

So, Is ABS really worth it? I dont have ABS at the moment.. but my brakes lock up sometimes (my enthusuastic braking, as weight will tell ya.. ) and its definetly an underwear changing moment - Ok, so I did stop braking and then swerve which is basically what ABS did.. but, I think Id feel safer if I was still braking? Steve A said it was because my engine was so light (1.2 8v) that it would lock up easier..(and I have Toyos on the front.. )

I dunno.. should I hold out for one with ABS? I aint in a mad rush to get one.. but I dont know if I should be passing up all these nice cars because they dont have it.

Mate my phase 2 valver stops no probs without ABS in a straight line. Try and touch the brake with the wheels on a slight turn and the car doesnt know what to do, back locks up and trys to over take the front! If your not in a hurry id wait for ABS!

like ive said before itll save you front end when a roundabout and a lorry come into the equation.

Stop being a girl Daz, ABS aint all that special.

Youll hardly lock up anyway with a valver, Ive only ever done it once or twice and I drive like a lunatic lol!

There is the difference right there.. ABS dont stop braking even when you are swerving, and you dont conciosly (how the hell do you spell that ?) have to do anything.. which is handy when split seconds count.

If you think like that then ABS or not youll have an accident...

Its confusing.. on one hand, everything I read say its useful, you lock up but can steer.. which is handy.. but then, waiting for a Valver with one which matches everything else I want is proving tricky.

Maybe Ill keep waiting..

therein lies my point! if a 65 yr old w**ker in a fiestas coming straight for you - locked up not being able to steer - which would you rather have? Id rather still have the front of my car than say - ooo look at me im ard i drive un-assisted.

Like Rich says, ABS doesnt make you invincible, but on the other hand, my current 172 would be written off if it werent for it, so Im a firm ABS supporter!

Edit - for the record, I was pootling down the road at 30mph (really!) and a car on a side street started to pull out. He then rolled back so I assumed hed seen me, but noooo, he just floored it out of the junction with me about 10ft away. All I could do was stand on the brakes as hard as possible and steer into the junction that he was turning out of. Without ABS Id have def. locked up and wouldnt have been able to steer.

Think Ill definetly wait for one with ABS.

Its one of those things I think.. where you never use it but then it helps just once and its all been worth it.

Id hate to buy a car with no ABS for the sake of it, then hit something cus I couldnt steer under heavy braking; then wishing Id have waited in the first place!
