Advice Needed - 172 Diffuser

Hi Guys.

I posted recently regarding an oil leak I had on an x reg 172 that I got from a local dealer a month ago. the dealer has advised that they are repairing the car for me but has until now been unable to advise what was causing the problem (it's been with them a week!).

He's just called and and advised it's the diffuser causing the leak the part will be replaced and they will replace the cam belt also whilst they are doing it as they have to take the engine apart anyway.

I'm not great with mechanical stuff but I though a diffuser was an aero part at the rear of the car? Can anyone advise how this can cause a leak that I thought was likely to be the rocker cover?

Cheers for your thoughts?

Maybe he means the "dephaser".......

Which is indeed a leak potential......

Its one of the cam wheels, the one that alters the timing and its full 'o' oil

Looking at the previous posts on here regarding the dephaser this is getting me very worried. It's the dealers own workshop doing the job as he wouldn't let me take it to a renault specialist under the warranty. These clowns already "fixed" the door handle once and didn't think to check the door actually opened once they finished!

Any recomendations on a specialist I can take it to once they've finished it to check it over? I'm in Cardiff btw.

AP developments aren't far from memory.

Where is the leak? I'd be pretty certain it's just the rocker covers leaking, rather than the dephaser. They're pretty common for it.

Appears to be front left side of the engine towards the top. Don't have any pics unfortunately and I couldn't really locate with just a quick look before I took it back to them. There was definitely oil over the cam belt though and I was losing a fair amount. Lost 1 ltr in less than 200 miles (motorway and back roads to work) with pretty sensible driving.

Sounds too heavy a leak to be the rockers, imo. not impossible.

If there was oil on the belt itself, it would more likely be the dephaser.

We've seen rocker covers leak so badly they pool in the lower part of the inlet manifold which then in turn over fills down the cambelt area, worth just flashing a light across the lower inlet before pulling it all apart, will only take 2 seconds to check.
