advice needed on driveshafts for clio sport 172 phase 2

  RS Clio 2.0 172 Cup
Hi I need some advice as im being told different things. I need to replace the drivers side driveshaft on my 2002 clio sport 172 phase 2. Is it true that the standard 182 driveshaft will fir my phase 2 172? I need to get it replaced asap as the knuckle joint has collapsed and its tereible round a left hand corner feel like the wheel is coming off. Your advice would be much appreciated

yep non cup 182 shaft will fit a non cup 172.

Contact Adam at wolverhampton renault they are just shy of £110

IIRC Ph1 although shorter will also fit, and if you are running a lot of camber and lowered a lot means you wont crush the joint like you can do otherwise.

Hey, sorry for jumping on your thread, but I'm looking to replace both my driveshafts, I have a phase 2 172 cup. Will driveshafts off a 172 non cup fit?
or does it have to be cup shafts?

ive also been told there are 2 types of drivers side shafts, 1 piece or 2 piece, is this correct?

many thanks for all your help

If your car is standard height and standard camber you will most likely find the 1 piece ph1 shafts are too short. The (two piece drivers side) phase 2 should be ok, and the 1 piece cup ones definitely will be.

Thanks, so i can order the 1 piece drive shafts as long as their ph2 shafts? Or am I better off ordering the 2 piece drivers side shaft??

Sorry but this is all new to me.

  Cup In bits
You'll need a complete shaft including bearing carrier that bolts to the block if you go down the 2 piece way.

I haven't removed the shafts yet, does anyone know if the drivers side shaft on a 2003 cup is 1 piece or 2 piece? Thanks

Thanks for that, I'll make sure I order 1 piece....

also, would a gearbox from a 172 sport (2003) fit my 172 cup (2003)?
many thanks

It will fit, but it wont have the speedo drive in it that your cup requires.

You need either:
Ph1 box - will fit but slightly taller geared (around 5% IIRC)
early non cup Ph2 box - identical to cup
any Ph2 172 Cup box

Late 172, all 182, all 182 cup, all trophy = wont work as no speedo drive.

Very early, like upto 51 or maybe 02 plate, but dont go by the reg, go by if it has a speedo sender or not.

Thanks, my cup is a 2003 though, does that matter?
Just go for 1 with a speedo sensor?

No it doesnt matter what year your cup is, as the 172 cups all use the same box as the early non cups, they didnt update the cups when they updated the others because the cups dont have ABS and the later non cup cars use the abs sensor for speed input which is why they dont need it in the box.

Brilliant, thanks very much for your help!!!!!
So buying 2.0 172 sport driveshafts will be fine for the cup or early non cup gear box???

The gearbox end of fitment for all the shafts is the same.
The only thing that differs between early and late boxes is the speed sensor being there or not.
