See if you can pick up a Renault tunepoint second hand on here or ebay.

Paid about £60 for mine, charges the ipod too & you can use headphone input and usb sticks.

this looks amazing never seen this before however seems pricey from dealers and cant find any cheap :(

would there be any alternatives i.e. a radio that would plug in and still use the controls?

^^^ I got myself a Sony Head unit a while back and spoke to 'MT Audio' on here. Sorted me out a Connects2 unit that basically plugs into the Head unit and into the existing connection for the stalk controls, this basically makes the stalk controls work on the Head unit.. Nothing on the market fits directly into your existing stalk controls, if your after a new head unit you will need to get the same kind of set up as me..

Either a tunepoint rare as anything 2nd hand-150 odd from Renault iirc.
Or I do Ipod adapters which charge your iPod and control from the headunit and stalks like the tunepoint but at approx half the price.

Your other option is a new headunit, stalk adapters are £35 from me and I do alpine headunits with an aux in starting from £70
