Advice on hybrid insurance

  MK1 Clio 16v
I'm currently insured with Adrian Flux on my valver, and the policy expires on the 25th Jan.

Since my gearbox went on the 1.8 16v engine i have dropped a williams engine into the valver, however it's still declared as a 1.8 16v engine on the policy.

I do not want to renew my policy with Adrian Flux, as i've heard they are rubbish, and the only reason i insured my car with them was because they were the only company that would insure it! It cost me £2000.00, Third Party Fire & Theft, when i was 19, with 0NCB and less than a years driving experience.

I'm guessing if i try to insure it with them as a 2.0 16v, they won't be able to insure it, or will they? Are there specialist insurance companies for hybrid cars?

I'm now 20, with 1 years NCB, and 2 years driving experience. I'd like to insure with Green Light but they won't touch me until i'm 21, so can anyone recommend any insurance companies that i can try?

The car is slightly modified, with white williams wheels, williams engine, tinted rear windows, colour coded side strips, ITG filter in standard airbox, mongoose exhaust, CAT 1 toad alarm, and keyless entry due to chavs de-locking my car for me. :dead:

Would like to insure the car fully comp, but obviously i don't want to pay anything near the £2k i paid previously, as it's way too expensive! Also, would be beneficial if, should i need to claim, the insurance company replace things on a like for like basis. Would also be nice if the policy allowed me to drive other cars third party, but i probably can't get this until i'm 21.

Any help or recommendations would be much appreciated!

Im fully comp with Admiral coz I have massive trouble insuring cars and im nearly 21. They let me have mods on my 1.2 16v and only push the premium up a bit. I think my insurance is like 1300 quid a year with them at the moment. If i had no mods to my car my insurance would drop to only like 900 quid.. Bonus!

well if it's £1300 for a 1.2, i hate to think what they might quote for a 2.0 16v!

Can anyone answer my question about whether the usual insurance companies are able to insure a car with a different engine? If i change it on the log books would they just class it as the same insurance group as a williams?

£4,200 near as dammit was the last quote I had on the standard 2.0ltr Clio Sport.

And if you have a complete new engine, it will change insurance bands and it will change everything to do with the car:- servicing, insurance, tax.. The lot I believe.. Quote me if im wrong and ill stfu.

Do you pay more tax on a 2.0 16v engine over a 1.8 16v engine? I pay enough as it is! lol!

If you wanted to get an indication of what it will be when you turn 21 you could input a quote on our wbeiste with the date of birth making you 21. That way you will have an idea of what it will be when 21.

I dont know mate, I only have the 1.2 and thats £100.00 tax for the year, I would imagine the 2.0ltr is going to be in the price band for Sports cars, or it may be classed as a hatchback (even though a clio is).. I really am not sure, but I would imagine paying £155.00 for tax on that size engine..

But I always thought tax went on vehicle chassis, not engine size.. :S

If its a 2.0l from a 1.8 just dont say! lol

Its illegal but they wont be able to tell.....thats the beauty!

Doubt the police could tell the difference between a 1.8 and a 2,0, they look identical

Try HIC, theyve always been really good for me. The best thing to do is to get a quote on the 1.8 and ask if them if it would make much difference if you dropped a 2.0 in it. They are a good company and can give you an agreed value on the car cus its been modified.

Worth a try mate.

As above HIC.

Were very good for me when I had points and claims etc (only on a 1.2 though).

You have got to be a little careful with insurance, a few years ago i had a 1.6 Nova with a 2.0 sri engine in it and managed to run into the back of someone but cus i was Fire and Theft they checked his car and not mine so got away with it but gave me a big headacre. With Fire and Theft they have no interest in yours if it gets damaged you only get that with fully comp

As mentioned above it's near enough impossible to tell the difference between the 1.8 and 2.0 with the engine sitting in the engine bay. I don't know what they would ever be likely to check but I can't see anyone going into enough detail to find out it's a 2.0 as the only sure fire way of checking is by looking at the strengthening veins on the rear of the block - and 99.9% of people won't even know that.

I ran a 2.0l as a 1.8 on insurance.

As said, swap the engine codes if you want. Other than that its hard to tell. Almost impossible! Especially if you use the 1.8 mani

  Better than yours. C*nt.
It's illegal and police and various insurance companies DO trawl these sites looking for this stuff.

Come clean, if you're having to ask NOW about tax and insurance you really shouldn't have done the engine conversion.

If you can afford it then yes I would definately declare the 2.0, but if you can't afford the insurance for the 2.0 then I would personally just not bother to declare it. I have everything declared on my current car and in general say you should declare everything, but when even those who are in the know about these cars can't even tell you what engine it is without a fair bit of scrutiny then you might as well declare it as a 1.8 imo.

Cheers for the advice.

I gave Quinn Direct a call, but to be honest they were rubbish. She took all my details and asked for all the mods, only to tell me at the end they couldn't provide a quote as it's 'Too high in performance'.

I'll give HIC a try, are there any others i can call? Bearing in mind i'm not 21 until May!

May 6th!

Just had a quote from Greenlight Car Insurance, all mods declared, 160BHP Williams engine, fully comp, for just £957.75!

BARGAIN!

Why can't i be 21?

Any companies similar to Green Light that can give a similar quote for a 20 year old?
