advice on taking out rear window

im changing the rear window and fitting it into a new tailgate tomorrow. ive done it before with a ruler. which wasnt too hard. but is there an easier way when removing it?

i was thinking take the glass out first, then re-fit the rubber seal.

also, when putting the glass into the new frame... using string is the correct thing to do, right?
