advice please - clio 1.4 :-)

Thinking of getting a new 1.4 16v dynamique. Just wondering if theyre any good?

Anyone got any good/bad reviews?

Theyre quite nippy for the engine size... i used to have a 1.4 16v. 98bhp seems to be enough to see you keeping up with the likes of Saxo VTR etc.

Dont buy it new tho... get one about a year old and save a couple of grand!

  850 T5. mmmm Turbo!

yeh get a 1.4 they are faster than the 2.0 litres!

seriously though mines been ok apart from.

8 injection coils changed

dodgy throttle, which keeps bringing engine lights on and turning car to limp mode, usually when overtaking.

its a good car, can do 50mpg at a push, 45 if your steady and 31 if you drive it like a mentallist. it goes quite fast been upto 130 (indicated) on closed roads of course.

if you never had 1, they have air con,CD player, electricwindows and mirrors, steering wheel stereo controls, 98bhp, not bad handling compaire to other standard cars of the size such as puntos and fiestas. thats not all they have im just trying to think of things my last cars didnt have.

hope this helps

Thanks.

Had a look at a 1.2 first - too sloooooow.

would love a 182 or a v6 but insurance would most likely be a killer...

PMd

also think about a 1.6. or a supperchipped diesel, it took my ages to get past dangermouse the other weekend!

Intresting vids. Is it just a standard 1.4 or have you made a few mods?

Worries me a bit that youve had 8 injection coils changed tho.

Ive also been advised not to get a diesel by a Renault dealer!

You can buy my black 1.4 Expression (with colour-coded Dynamique spoiler and Renault 15" alloys) for £5,350 - or make me an offer! Its advertised in the For Sale section ...not that Im desperate!

The 1.4 engine is pretty nippy, and comes alive at about 4,000rpm - great for overtaking. My missus had a 1.4 Dynamique. Great interior etc. I personally wouldnt bother going for the 1.6 - its a little bit quicker, but a few groups higher for the insurance. And Ive had 1.6s struggle to get past on dual carriageways - they DO get past, naturally, but they dont scream by!

And the 1.4 is only marginally slower than a VTR ... my mate had a VTR, and again, he struggled to get by.

If you get the Dynamique, which has all the bits on it and the 1.4 engine you should be quite pleased with the overall car. The 98bhp engine is quite perky but is no performance engine, when you bring it to life in the higher rev range it will do the job getting past something though.

I had a 1.2 before this which was a good engine again, just have to work the gears wisely to get the right result from it, so im now on the 1.4 and hopefully working my way through to the 2.0 as my age goes up and insurance hopefully goes down.

Should be near the top ... 2003 1.4 16v or something, the title is ...

Like Chris says above, if you work it hard, use the gears, it will be quite nippy. Its only a group 5 insurance, so it should be cheap - was costing me about £200 a year (me being 36, with 2 years no claims, 3 points on my licence and being a diabetic) - in comparison, my 182 is costing me £550 a year.

I think if I get one it would be a Dynamique, I hope you sell your car soon tho Shaun. Ive been looking at mini coopers aswell.

Thanks for your comments guys,

Francesca

i wouldnt buy another to be honest, i had loads of problems, suspension, automatic wipers and lights, not even starting with rattles like the sunroof

and renault aftersales care is attrocious. They were so bad as to call me once and tell me to collect my car, and that it was fixed, then when i got there they told it wasnt fixed, admitted they had made it WORSE than before, said i could take it home but it needed to be booked in again!! This resulted in throwing my keys at the guy and telling him to give me it back when it was fixed (with a few naughty words of course).

Not good quality cars in my opinion. I mean, theres nothing wrong with mine now (nothing that other clios dont have wrong). Actually, you should buy mine, 04 plate, eibachs, 172wheels and skirts, colour coded. It looks good at least lol

  Mazda MX5 1.8

if youve never owned a renault before i wouldnt jump into it with both feet

they can be tempermental little things sometimes! it just adds to their character.........

they rattle and sometimes feel as if they are gonna break down any second (they dont tend to break down but sometimes dont feel well - must have got a cold).

the coils are a problem - however renault say they have fixed them now and they are of better quality (no comment) and only 1 of mine has failed so far but replaced by the AA guy at my home. (they have 1 coil per cylinder). other than the coils im not really aware of any common mechanical problems? (rattles excluded)

oh the rear shocks can sometimes leak and need replacing but ud be unlucky to have that happen.......

i like my 1.6 - got enough speed and fuel eco is excellent (50+ mpg is acheivable) and the 1.4 isnt much slower.

LOL. maybe a mini cooper of a golf would be better route to take.

I used to own a Fiat Punto - bought it from new as a second car (had my black Clio as my first car). I had it two months, and one Saturday morning, woke up, and decided to trade it in for a second-hand 1.2 Dynamique. Why? Well, the steering wheel, over the two months, decided to gradually go off centre; it flattened its battery twice; the rear wiper used to just switch itself on (try driving ten miles with it scraping back and forth on a sunny day - in the end, I took the fuse out) - the dealers tried three times to mend it (twice, I turned up, and they hadnt ordered the part); the nearest they got was when I managed to drive three miles before it switched itself back on; it didnt start four times, had to get the AA out; the airbag light used to come on and off intermittently; oh, and it was designed for gibbons - Im short, and I have to have the seat pushed forward to reach the pedals in my cars ... but push the seat forward, and the steering wheels in your face ... those Italians must have long arms and short legs!

So, one morning, I woke up, checked Autotrader, found a 1.2 at a dealer, and traded my Punto in. It cost me £6,500 brand new, and over the two months, I lost £1,500 on it. Traded it against a 2 year old Clio which was up for £5,000.

Oh, and the dealer rang up a month later to tell me the part for the wiper was in - I told them that Id had enough of the heap of junk, and had got shut of it!

Guess what Im trying to say is that you can buy a complete dog, no matter what the make of car is. If you want a car that doesnt rattle, drives fantastic and is very, very smooth and luxurious, you have to pay top dollar for it!

And the Fiat dealership was absolute sh*te! Just like the Renault dealership!

Even if you pay alot more though, you still get problems, you can pay 10k, 20k, 30k+ etc and still get the same problems (or worse) than a 5k car. TVRs are an example of this (even tho its not an every day car).

VWs seem to be pretty reliable & Audis.

Every car has its faults!
