After a 182 Gearbox, Preferably recon with no exchange.

Preferably after a recon 182 box but I don't have a box to exchange as ive blown a hole in the bottom of mine.. Don't really want to risk a cheap job off ebay as ive heard a few horror stories. Also don't want to be spending ££££'s with Renault, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Also the engine wont start now, but it turns over. Would I be right to presume it could of knocked the crank sensor out?

blowing a hole in the box shouldn't stop the engine firing unless its somehow fubar'd the flywheel or knocked the box off the bell housing so the crank sensor can no longer read.

I've put a hole though several boxes and locked up/stripped gears and never not been able to start the engine with the clutch depressed (to disconnect the box) ever.

personally I'd get hold of a cheap second hand box from a 172/182 of right type (no speedo drive) and get it rebuilt by either Agency transmissions who are well rated on here (based in Wolverhampton iirc) or a local place. that way you have piece of mind that its been done right.

if you snoop about you should be able to find a used box on high miles for cheap, for example I have picked up a late phase 2 172 box with no speedo to rebuild for my 182 for 60 quid

Hmm im lost with this one then! No engine management lights have popped up either..

what happened when the box let go? did the car come to an abrupt halt, or did it keep going?

The engine cut out but the car carried on rolling, didn't lock up.. It might of when it went but didn't notice.. And I'll admit it was driver error this time :/ haha, I missed a gear!

have you had a look at your tdc? sits above the flywheel so possibly knackered something else and thrown that out the way

Missed a gear going down instead of up? Sounds like you've buzzed it. New engine time...

Yeahh pretty sure I went from 3rd to 2nd instead of 4th on high revs too.. really don't know how I managed that!

Yeh porkie did that at Bedford. Completely wrecked a forged engine. If gearbox internals have edited you can bet your money that it's fucked the motor.

Oh god don't go telling me that! was hoping id got away with it and it would be something simple like the crank sensor or just tripped the crash switch! we shall soon see!

ai as above chap am afraid, if you made it have it into 2nd at high revs in 3rd its very possible its chewed the engine too, hence the none starting

however, its worth doing the simple checks such as making sure the crank (TDC, or whatever you want to call it) sensor is in position and nothing else is obviously a miss, just to be sure

Started work on the job today after picking up a box yesterday, and the clutch has twisted and destroyed the box and damaged the fly wheel, stripping bolts and teeth on the flywheel! gutted. Don't suppose anybody knows of any flywheels up for sale??
