After extensive research and testing...

....I can now publicly divulge the secret to driving a 172 economically!

Get the damn bus!

My MPG fluctuates from 28.4 - 28.8. Ive tried aggressive driving (gear changes at 5 1/2 to 6 rpms) and grandad driving (3 to 3 1/2 rpms). Ive tried supermarket petrol and optimax. It doesnt budge from 28.8 at its best.

Is this about the same for most people or just me?

Since I got my R sport ECU. the econ has improved quite a bit. On the motorway Ive had it, at a steady 80-90mph, at around 50-60mpg!!!. Usually around 30-32 tho

What a bugger. I have a full system and viper but that shouldnt make that much of a difference surely shirley. Even on the motorway cruising at 90 it doesnt sway. Hmmmmm

  ICE'dberg MK2 172

is that reading from the onboard computer??

Mine says 36/38mpg onboard, but when I fill it up and work it out then its only 29/30mpg.

Mind you still better than when I first fitted the Viper.....20mpg!!!!

OK now tho after the chip

mines 32 to 36.8 but once had it at 46 going down hill outta gear lol, I am going to see what an eco-tech does with the mpg on the ecu going to fit on weekend.

I could never get mine to budge below 32 MPG, EVER!!

Im doing low 20s in the CTR!

  996 Carrera

~37 mpg with and without the Rsport ECU.

It seems more sensitive with the new ECU though - if i hold it in gear past 5000rpm the MPG drops a few points.

With the standard ECU i could spank it everywhere and it wouldnt budge.

Lowest ive seen it is 17mpg - on the rolling road.

I dont think the Onboard trip comps are majorly accurate! Best thing to is run your light comes on. Fill up with £10 then see how much you het until the light comes on. See how it compares

I know that aint that accurate either! But worth a go!

i find with well what is only a 52 plate 1.4 16v that on supermarket cack i was getting around 34-35mpg, with optimax this is up to 37-38mpg

The mpg counter (on the 172) gives you an average mpg since the last reset! to get an accurate mpg go at the speed you wish to measure then reset the mpg counter go for 1 or 2 miles(might be more??) and thats your reading
