Alarm problem

My META M99/36T system has given up the ghost. I dont know exactly why, but just want to throw a few questions:

1. How can I tell if its because the fobs need re-coding?

2. Would a system like this use the original Renault alarm infa-red sensor? If so, how can I tell if its broken?

Im just using the central locking at the moment and am over-riding the immobiliser with another fob in the dash.

Im in no hurry as my car is always parked in a locked compound behind two other cars and I never leave the car anywhere (use bus/train)...but it would still be nice to get it working!
