I am currently looking at getting a new toy. The vectra is about to need a bit of work and as it was written off 18 months ago, i cant be bothered. I dont need a car for work as i cycle to work now and we have a Kia carens for the family days out.
Should i buy a 197 or cheap 200?
It would be bit of a daily for the wife to use instead of clogging up the kia (6 mile commute and dropping kids school run 1 mile each way), and a bit of fun for me with perhaps the odd return to sprints/hillclimbs. I am yet to drive either but have driven Clio 172 cups and 182. Is the driving position better etc. Much differences?
Let me know your opinions.
Cheers

Do it! They are great cars, I had a AG 200 about 2 years back and I could not fault it. It even gave my stepdads 911 a run through some welsh twisties. Yeah you'll probably only get 25mpg with what you'll be using it for but that shouldn't really be an issue with the amount of mileage you'll be doing. Just check the belts have been done!

I think the driving position in the 197/200 is better than the 1*2 (not hard!) and the controls do feel a bit 'nicer' somehow. It certainly feels like a more grown-up, sure-footed car, which I think is partly down to the size of it. The trade-off is that it doesn't feel quite so urgent and you have to work the engine harder to maintain progress. Once it's on the boil though, I thought it was felt pretty good, I just missed the 'instant' feel of a 1*2. Even in fourth at 30mph, a 1*2 feels like it's raring to go and picks up almost instantly.

I have finally got one. I have already messaged Chris at EFi to get it mapped as the flat spot is so annoying. Drives nice otherwise. I might take some more better pictures sometime.
Anyone want a cheap, diesel vectra?

Is That Nathan's car? shogun on 197.net

I saw you were looking. Did you look at the other albi in Redditch?

I Have a Nimbus 197 Cup, bought it last October, got it home and Haven't driven it since as it's undergoing a meg conversion.

Before I Started, and the blue wheels are going as I have some superleggera's.

Yes i bought it from Shogun. Im happy with it, just have to wait until August to get it mapped.
I did look at the other one too but this one was worth spending the extra on.
Other would have needed a bit spending on it for my liking such as tyres (it had fairly new budgets on it. Not my thing).
Put my stamp on it now....

Hi Dave, what sort of problems have you had?.
Headlights failed completely - needed new UPC (https://turborenault.co.uk/threads/197-headlight-wiring-relay.82805/)
Lower swivel balljoints - hub split when replacing one
Exhaust flexis, then exhaust joint not matching up and blowing, cut the middle section out and fitted a sleeve joint and now its so loud without the centre box it wakes the dead, despite the OE backbox being the size of a planet.
Failed folding mirror (replaced)
Failing keyless button on drivers door
Random ESP light came on once every few weeks, seems to have cured itself now
Top torque link shot (replaced)
Bottom torque link shot (replaced)
Funny noise on gearchange I have been chasing, thats cost me a driveshaft, wheel bearing, aux belt/tensioner, it's still there and it's itrritating
Fading cheap s**t trim
Build quality that makes my 21 Turbo feel like a Bentley
Terrified of the gearbox synchro's shitting themselves
Gear ratio's are ridiculously short, my 172 was bad enough but the 197 6th is even shorter than the 172 5th which is unfathomable
Kangarooing
Misfire at medium throttle levels at just over 2k rpm, in every gear, every time. Like i'm running out of fuel, but i'm not.
Consistently terrible MPG

Done 68k, bought it to replace my aging 161,000 mile 172. Wish i'd kept the 172 now.

I know the feeling bud and I always say I'm going to sell it but then go for that one hoon or that one track day and it just seems to work and I have so much fun it's what makes Renault. Renault

Bloody heck Dave, you seem to have had more than your fair share of problems.
