All my seats out. OMFG!

LOL! ok calm down ;)

I've still got everything Ive taken out so far, so I'll bring some proper scales from work one evening when I've taken everything out.

What's the definition of full strippage? ;)

Fine! I'll do it this afternoon!! :)

Are there any bits that I have to take care of not ripping/damaging the carpets or linings?

I will be keeping all the bits I take out just incase I ever want to put it all back in again :)

Also, any advice for the tar? Ive got a heatgun and a chisel - will that do?!

seats are easy. take some care with removing the plastic side mouldings in the rear of the car. front seats need unbolting to remove the carpet, take care not to rip it on sharp edges etc. i would leave the headlining in for now, decide on that at a later date. yeah, a heat gun and chisel/paint scraper will be fine for removing tar. it will be wise to keep all of the nuts and bolts safe for refitting in the future, and take a mental note of how it all went.
you will notice a difference without a doubt, only minor but it is noticable. just take your time stripping it. most of the things that you take out can always be put back in anyway :) mine actually squeaks less since stripping it bare then putting it back together myself.
good luck.

Stripping the rear out makes a difference! (and not a placebo one) Anyone thats stripped their car in parts and isnt being an internet b*tch will tell you that.

Let 2psi out of the rear tyres if you're keeping it like that, will calm down the snakey rear a little!

Glad you're enjoying it fella.

lol! You guys are a bad influence on me!

Right Im off to give it a go.

I'll probably start a project thread later on as it's turning into one now :)

OMG! Stated this post last night and thought I'd revisit it and BLAM like a million posts!

Car is defo different! Water weighs 1kg per litre and I think fuel is slightly lighter but even so 40 litres of fuel is 40kg so should we be putting £5 in at a time. Out of interest my car is low on fuel at the mo too so maybe that all added to the feeling plus I turned AC off.

I'm gonna go weigh all the bits in a mo and see howm my BHP/tonne has changed.

Cheers for all the comments.

petrol is lighter than water; think it's 'about' 3.3kg/gallon

planning on removing what will go back in easily from mine once i've got one of these daft M10 eyebolts (may as well put my harness in at the same time). something to play with on a summer's afternoon anyway

removing the sound-deadening tar's a bit extreme - you'd want to be sure of future plans before removing anything irreplaceable really

Fair enough it may make it when a fraction of a second quicker to 60. But for day to day use it's a pain in the ass, you can't have people in the car and it's raw and tatty. For a track toy - then aye sure!!

Just weighed everything. Everything I took out including jack and isofix bar totals 44kg! That plus sod all fuel really makes a difference.
Out of interest the front passenger Recaro and rails weighed in at 24kg which is more than the rest of the stuff put together! That means that if you want more than 1 seat in your car you should actually lose your passenger seat and keep the rear bench and that means you can still seat 4!

Sadly it is all gonna go back in when I have my new rails for the Recaro.

Henry your point about petrol being lighter than water is a good one! Just looked it up and a litre of petrol weighs 0.72 kgs so 40 litres is 28.8 kilos.

My normal BHP/Tonne is 165, with my weight saving it is now 172. Not masses but the cheapest gain in power to weight I'll ever see. And the lack of weight defo helps with braking and cornering.

^^ Wow at the weight of the Recaro! Didnt know they were that much.

Also, the tar on the roof is massive! Its so thick! How on earth do you get that off?!

I stripped mine out and it was around a 40kg difference, thats about half my body weight and I noticed a difference in the handling. It really did feel a lot more nimble and was a little steadier under really heavy braking, there wasn't much more the in the way the accelerated, pulled a little nicer in the higher gears but nothing massive.

Only thing I didn't like the moon buggy on the back arch, wasn't good at all!!!

Ok, Ive taken the lining out and all the tar except those bits in the rear pillars, which look like a b*****d to get to!

I cant believe how heavy the roof tar is! The only scales in the house at the moment is my Mums cooking scales, which only go up to 2 kilos! This tar is WAY heavier than that!

I think we do yeh, but they're really old and I dont think they'd be very accurate lol!

When I've done everything I'll weigh it properly :)

Just to add to this the standard 182 seats with airbags are circa 32kg, the recaros are more around the 25kg mark, a good fibre-glass bucket weighs in at under 10kg so moving from standard to buckets you can shed upwards of 45kg.

You guys have no idea what you're talking about. I removed all my interior and rear bumper and it's much lighter...

Sure sitting on a seat makes for a good driving position but I don't sit that low + you get a great view of the sky. Left the driver door card in to make getting in and out easier.

Can't believe no-one on here has done this

Taking my engine out and replacing the steering wheel with handlebars will be the next step.

yeeah see what you mean. just wondered if they class seat removal as a 'mod' as such, but when you say it like that, makes sense tbh!i VERY rarely use the rear seats, and then its only 1 so i could just whack the single back in, only a few screws aint it lol
