Alloy wheel refurb Tips?

  Titanium 182 FF
Right then , i took a trip down to wales yesterday to pick up some pro race 1.2's , i bought them knowing the paint wasn't in the best condition but they were a bit worse than i thought but bought them anyway as he knocked money off because of it. So i had planned to plasti-dip them but the flaking is too bad for that now so its going to have to be a DIY refurb. I know a couple of you have done a diy refurb so any tips?

cheers guys

The finish is all in the prep is my best advice.
If you skip steps here, then they will look pretty bad and will end up having to do them again.
You could take them to a powdercoaters which is quite a cheap way of doing it. Wont last as long as paint though but neither would have plastidipping them to be honest.

I was going to do mine myself but I am sending mine down to City Powdercoating tomorrow morning. I shall let you know what they look like.

I painted mine myself. They were pretty good. I made sure they were clean, sanded back, filler primer, primer, paint then lacquer.
The only advise I can suggest is make sure there is lots of paint on them - not in one go!!! But trying to paint the insides of the spokes (I have F1's) was difficult without getting runs on the front edge there are some areas which have less paint on and this is where the brake dust has attacked the paint. The one wheel has more paint on than the other three (no idea how!) but it is easier to clean and the brake dust hasn't got to it. I would also protect them (wax or a coating??) to help. You may have the same issue I had with your 1.2's, as its getting the paint inbetween the spokes is the important bit.

I need to do mine again, but I think I would get them professionally powder coated. But for less than £50 I maanged to do all 4 and the effect they have produced was brilliant. Don't regret doing them myself.

I will be attempting my own refurb and I can say its all in the prep. Alloy filler is good to use for scuffs and gutter rash. My concern with spraying the wheels was baking them. I mean you could easily leave them for a week to dry but baking them makes the paint more durable (less susceptible to chips). As for spraying the inner bits of the wheels start with those first. Light coats in those particular areas and then work out to the rest of the wheel. So basically do in between each spoke first. You can get a gun attachment for spray cans which makes it easier to spray and make sure before you spray, spray the can on some grass to clear debris build up on the nozzle.
Wetting the floor helps keep dust away from the wheels.

It's quite a few years ago I refurbed this wheel I bought off ebay as a spare. It was quite badly scratched , nothing too deep but needed filling. So i used Isopon metalik filler.
As others have said , prep is very important . Keeping the the wheel dust/grease free. Also like @M90SR advised , keeping the floor area wet keeps the dust down and also the use of one of those aerosol can guns makes it easier to control .

Thanks for all the tips guys! Gonna give it a crack when the weather picks up. The turinis however are going for a proffesional refurb as they're to nice for me to mess around with. Anyone know the paint code for trophy turinis?
