Ello, this is my first post as i have just signed up. Nice to see such a vibrant community here!

Well, i passed my driving test a month ago and have been saving for my first car which is, as youve probally already guessed a Clio. Im after the old style one. Now as im a student, i havent got a huge amount of spend on mods. Just looking to get a cd headunit, lower it, stick some alloys on it and generally make it a tidy, insurance friendly job ;)

Im hopefully after a dark blue one so it looks like the older Williams. Now id like to get my hands on a set of Williams gold alloys if possible. Just wondering if you lot have got any advice for me reguarding the clio and about the alloys im after :p

Cheers

Craig

What Car are you looking for? 1.2? 1.4? RSI? 16v?

I assume since you have just passed your test then a 1.4 would be the fastest one resonable one to insure!

Well good luck, spend a bit of time and find a mint one, look around the forum and there should be some for sale with most of the mods.

If your budget can strech to an RSI let me know!

Alright geezer and welcome. What ya studying and where btw?? Plenty of lazy students on here I think, including myself!

The 1.4 would be the best aye, especially seeing as youve just passed. The 1.2 would be alright but after a year youd get fed up with the immense lack of power! A valver or an RSi might kill you a bit on insurance, being 1.8 engines!

Williams alloys arent that hard to find (someone on the RenaultSportsClub forum has/had some for sale @ £250). You can lower the car yourself (if I can do it any muppet can) and the Clio isnt hard to maintain although it is French!!!

You should be able to pick up a 1.4 Clio for a grand easily, there is a guide on the main Cliosport page on what to look out for. The old style Clio has 3 Phases, 1, 2 and yep, 3. Not going to go into detail about each one but as the phases went on, you got a couple more electrical gadgets to play with and better bits and bobs. http://www.cliosport.net/buying.asphttp://www.cliosport.net/buying.asp is what you need to study my friend if you havent already!

Good luck in finding a car!

Cheers :D

I currently live in Bristol, and im in my final year of 6th Form studying Biology, Chemistry and Computing. Gonna stay in Bristol and go to UWE for University. One of the reasons i wanted to stay in Bristol was because i wanted to do up a car.

Im really into the Williams Clios and ive always wanted to try and have one, and this is really the only way. Just looking for a few mods to be honest, as someones already said tidy looks better than over-the-top. Just suspension, alloys (Williams), CD headunit e.t.c...

1.2 is probally my best bet for the minute. My friend has a modded Clio and his is 1.2 and ive always been impressed with it. So i dont see why it cant be a good car for me.

That buyers guide looks mint, gonna have a study of it :D

Hi to both of u!!!!!!!! there r a few clinically insane people here ie:BenR, Fatherted, Gr, sammy, and many others but dont worry because they are having increased doses of medication as we speak!

Good tidy, clean, Clios are the way to go!!!

Hi mate - Im in Bristol Uni (well, finishing my MSc in a few weeks).

This is a Williams:

http://www.cliosport.net/specs/16v.jpg

...and this is a 16v. They both share the same pumped-up exterior.

A Mk1 Clio has to be the way to go, but Id be careful about making a 16v or especially Williams lookalike.

None of the "normal" Clios came in the same blue as the Williams, though most colours were available on the 16v. The 16v/Willy have huge flared arches, bumpers and a bonnet bulge/scoop - and recreating these would not be easy! Since Williams are also a very, very rare special edition (under 1200 in total of the 1, 2 & 3) a Williams look-alike stands out like a sore thumb. Both the 16v and Willy have different interiors as well, with the Willy having blue carpets and other details. I guess you could find some add on bits in the spares section on these forums.

My recommendation would be to lower your Clio on some 16v wheels and to get a metallic colour that flatters the already decent arches of the normal Clios. Then colour-code it and add a small spoiler - and thats all you really need to make it look smooth. I did that with my old 1.2 (which I loved, sniff, sniff). Everyone has their own style though, but most would agree that making a Willy replica is pretty much impossible.

I wasent aiming to make an identical Williams. It was more the blue and gold wheel aspect that attracted me to it. Of course id love the 2litre engine, but i dont think the insurance company would like that :(

Its more the case of making a tidy car, and i feel the gold wheels and the dark blue colour help produce a tidy looking car.

Are the alloys that hard to find? If 1200 have been made, i doubt alot of the owners want to sell their alloys

Yeah, even if you find some Willy alloys then theyre often scruffy. Not many Willys get written off in a year (although it does happen!) and 99% of Willy owners keep their cars standard on the outside. Your best bet if you want the tidy look is to find some 16v wheels as theyre 15s and suit the Clio (obviously!). Like I say, none of the non-16v/Willy Clios came in a metallic blue - although some were avaliable in a flat dark blue (especially the later Phase3, when the 16v/Willy werent made any more).

If I had my first Clio again, Id make use of these forums and get advice and parts from here! Have a browse through the galleries on the main site too (link at top of this page).

What do the 16V wheels look like mate?

Im really open to suggestions, as youre all Clio owners who know what youre talking about!

They do two sorts.. Phase1 and Phase2.

I have Phase2s on my Clio.. (none-16v). - They really are very nice wheels.

So best bet is the 16V alloys?

They look quite smart, and im open for suggestions.

Anyone else got any ideas for alloys? (Remember im a student;))

Go for what you like, dont just go for what other people say looks nice. As at the end of the day its your car and your money you will be spending.

i would reccomend you to go for a 1.4RT as i did when i was in your position. There didnt seem to be too much difference in the insurance either.

You could get some aftermarket wheels second hand as there are always some for sale on here.

Oh and welcome. :p

Phil

Hi I am a student and I didnt bother with the 1.2 and got a 1.4 RT. It is the best compromise between a decent spec and resonable insurance costs i think.
