Alternative suspension options

  #174
I've been thinking about going down a different route in terms of suspension setup mainly because I can't really justify £750 on H&R's right now.

I want to go for Bilstein dampers but can't find them anywhere for the clio. The idea was to couple these with some custom faulker springs ( http://www.dfaulknersprings.co.uk/ ) as a mate of mine has this setup on his 106 and the handling is spot on IMO.

What would it handle like if I was to keep the standard cup dampers and fit these springs? I'd go for about a 50mm drop on the front and 30mm on the back as this is what most places like Mark Fish would set the car up with IIRC? I think something like a 200lb spring or possibly a little more would be about right on the front.

I've seen some Eibach dampers on the GDI site for about £450, but have my heart set on the billies  I'm going to get in touch with faulker today to see if they have any info on spring setups for clios.

Any help/advice would be greately appreciated :) Car is a 172 cup btw.

Any idea on a rough price? I may go for the faulkers using the cup dampers and then upgrade to the bilsteins if/when they are released.

Any ideas on spring specs I should be looking at? I want it as good as it can be for track but still road usable. I think 200lb should be a good starting point or possibly a little more but I have no idea on the rears!

Buy the 'rally car source book' and work out the base spring rates.

Calculations are included.

Experiment from there on !

Experiment from there on !

I'm going to try to experiment before buying lol, might save me from buying about 3 sets of springs lol.

I think I'll need to get the measurements off some springs that lower the car 50mm at the front and 30 at the rear so I know what size they need to be. I'm still pretty sure I'll need around 180 to 200lb though.

Actually, I've just seen ben_p's thread and he reckons he's running 300lb 7" springs on the front and 400lb on the rear. I'm sure sure how relevant this is as I'm not running coilovers but I bet that'd be damn hard!
