Amp help!

So I got in my car to go to work, head unit started up as usual, played the radio fine, then about a few seconds in there was some strange high pitch noises (thought it was in song, as it was radio 1 ) and then a small pop.

Now my components/tweeters/sub that are running off the amp aren't working, but my 6x9's which are just off the head unit are.

On the amp itself, there is normally a green light to show there is power, but it has turned red.

It's an edge ed7800 if that helps.

Any help on how to fix it?

(I'm a complete newb when it comes to sound systems, which is why I got someone else to fit it all for me!)

does the amp smell? if it does then it's goosed

if not disconnect every thing apart from power cables and see if it comes out of protect

It does not smell.

I think ill just unplug everything and plug it back in to see if that fixes it.

Red light on that amp means its blown, can be from either too little current, too much, a surge of power or its been banged.

You can reset them by taking the power out and then disconnect all the leads, then reconnect everything.

Dont forget to disconnect from the battery first before taking any leads out and then re connect all power/earth wires before attaching to the battery again.

Red light means it's in protection mode I thought?

Edge website says protection, talking to some one who deals with Edge stuff says they never reset so in effect are dead.

ive had an amp do the exact same its dead mate they normally do smoke and smell when they go aswell unless they have came loose inside

amazing guy but for what it will cost he can buy 2 possibly 3 of them amps lol

Don't suppose anyone local has an amp that they can test to make sure its 100% my amps fubar'd?

If the above test yielded no results, you have probably blown the output transistors/Ic's on one of the channels. not worth repairing if so as amps are cheap these days anyway.

I took all of the speaker wires out of the amp to insure that there was no shorts, I'm going to look for the earthing point in a bit though.

It wasn't loud at all when it went (about volume 10 out of 50) can't see how that would have blown it :/

if you have the resistance too low across the channels it could cause it to blow even at low vols. hard to say without seeing your whole setup.

How do I raise the resistance to stop this happening in the future then?

I have no idea what the x-overs settings are meant to be at too... could that have caused something?

Also, what do you want to see of my setup?

well to make a better judgement I would need to know the resistance of all the speakers connected to the amp alone with the way they were connected to the amp. to raise the resistance you wire speakers sharing the same channel in series instead of parallel.

I have the 2 front components/tweeters (edge ED306) in series and the sub (edge edb12 - 4 ohm) in parallel.

that should be ok. Probably just over-powered it a bit and the safety didn't cut-in correctly.

Just because its installed by a so called pro does not make it a dead cert for a good job.

If you seen him/her tuning it all in, was the volume on your headunit up loud or was it just on low? Because one of the main faults I see with people blowing amps or speakers is because it was not set up in the correct fashion, same as when people connect an amp, alot of people dont think to disconnect the cars main battery first before anything and then the last thing you do is reconnect the battery once all the main wires are connected.

He does it as a day job, and is trustworthy.

He did it when the volume high IIRC, was a long time ago, and yeah he disconnected the battery whilst doing all the work.

I've taken my sub and amp out of my car atm.

Gonna send off for warranty repair as soon as I get my invoice from the guy who installed it.

I've taken it to the guy who fitted it all for me and he said that it sounds like the amps goosed.

He's sending it off for repair under warranty xD
