Another cambelt thread

I know you must get a million of these but I bought an 05 1.6 clio earlier this week knowing it needed a cambelt (it's done 70k), and what a big job it was, so I got a good deal on the price.

I've been looking around for quotes, which range from £400 for a garage in London to £800 from Renault themselves.

I've settled on Scimitar Motor Services in Welham Green, Hatfield, which will do the belt and pump for £500.

He says he's got the right tools but I was wondering if anyone had used the garage before, or knows of a better one in the Hertfordshire area? Thanks.

I'd always ask Ranault to look at the price bud......reno dropped a couple of hundered for me when i told them it was stupid money

I know it doesnt help you in particular but I always like top put it out there

Things are different on the mainland with lots of specialists.

Good call, just rang my local Renault garage and asked them to drop the price and they said they'd call me back.

I do intend to post other things by the way, didn't just join to sort out my problem and then b****r off!

Good lad......they have to be realistic on proces i think.

Alot of them just go on what the computer says but luckily i got speaking to a person that agreed it was daft money and had the authority to drop the price.

Not my fault it took them 2 days in the end

:D

Haha! No wonder it costs so much.

How much did you pay if you don't mind me asking? And did you get the water pump done too? Mine's done 70,000 and I was told it would be a good idea to get both done, but I'm skeptical.

I paid 500 on the nose and that was without a dephaser or a water pump.

I didnt do the pump as my car had only 49K on the clock and the driver for doing the belts was the age.

The dephaser, well.....I guess i took a gamble there and in hindsight, I'd nearly get that done if i was doing it again.

I had my cambelt changed last year. It's just gone to BTM for another cambelt and dephaser...

Always change the dephaser, IMO. It'll come back to bite you.

Ok I'll put that to them, they originally quoted me £558 for the belts and £800 for the belts and pump, which seems outrageous.

Is the dephaser something to do with the variable valve timing? I'm lucky/unlucky enough not to have that on my 1600.

Yeah, it's a solenoid on the end of the exhaust cam. And yeah, VVT.

Last year? 52k.

Now on 70 and it's having it changed again, with the dephaser this time.

£500 for a timing belt and water pump on a K4M??? LoL, I'm too cheap!

What about jms they do cambelt changes for Rs clios give them a shout see if they do it for 1.6 clios

Have you got a number for them? Their website is down.

I'm having such a hard time finding someone around here to do it for a sensible price. Renault have come down to £600 and all the independent garages I've called want £4-500.

Argh!

See, thats a free £200 from Renault.....lol

I swear, I ask for money off EVERYTHING i buy now.

Its still a lot though Jin. I've still not paid my subs so won't name drop but I personally do K4M's on fixed fee at £250 all done with warranty - That's new timing belt, tensioners, water pump and coolant. Personally I wouldn't pay anyone anymore than £350 to do this job but make sure that whoever you use has the lockset to do the job correctly or it will end in tears!!!

mines a bit more than that, but i wont use pattern water pumps (nasty monkeymetal crap with plastic impellars), and i fit a new aux belt and tensioner at the same time

If using all genuine parts then those alone come to just over £250

On my last 1.6 I paid £350 for auxbelt kit and cambelt kit from a known garage up here with the tools. Didn't go for the waterpump though.

I agree there to Danny and i'll only use FAI pumps who supply Renault. Admitedly the aux belt run does bump it up but its rare the K4M tensioners die... just the belt really needs changing.
