Hope that gives you a few more to look at... & make the job of choosing a whole lot worse lol

Whats the difference between the Pentium Dual Core & the Core 2 Duo, is it just the L2 Cache & FSB?

Hope you pick on soon, i'll be checking this thread for more options! & then i probably won't be able to make my mind up & another year will pass!! lol

Thanks for the input, but defo 100% not having an acer, quality is more important for it's uses and it won't ever run a game. £400 is quite firm budget.

^^ thats what i wanted to hear.

core2 it is..
so Acer are no good then??? i've always heard pretty good things from people who have owned them??

I'd have an Acer but most peoples seem to phyiscially break, but i treat my stuff with respect, but she is dead 100% no on it, you know what woman are like, think it will have to be a Toshiba.

ah right, good to know that then, like you i'm quite careful with my stuff, but worth a thought?

Any good/bad reports on ASUS laptops? they seem to be quite good prices.

found that, which sounds ok for the money. although i need Firewire & it doesn't state that on there.(unless i missed it) also get a 2 yr warranty with it)

Just as another opinion on Acer, I have had an Acer 5672WLMi for a year or so and have had no problems with it. In terms of build quality, there is nothing wrong with them at all (or at least the model i have).

I use it as a desktop replacement for web surfing, business applications, and software development and it works just fine for me.

Having said that the battery only lasts a couple of hours and it weighs a ton.

Hmmm
i like the sound of this one (sorry another Acer, they seem to be sticking out to me!)

but the Graphics part it making me think twice..
***Graphics : Dedicated (X3100 8MB Dedicated Memory, up to 350 MB of shared memory)

Although i doubt i'd ever play a game on it!
From looking at Toshiba & others that PC world toshiba one sounds pretty good for £400 all expect the Pentium Dual Core Vs Core2Duo part. If that matters to the average user.??

My old man has an Acer! Good specs, and cheap but that's it!

Really bad build quality and the keyboard is pants, really small keys! seriously awful to use.

I dislike Acers - we use Dell at work and they're alright, but I've got a Sony SZ2 and it's still great.

Core2 does make a big difference to end users... Huge amounts quicker and better on battery.

I've used most makes of laptop, and Dell ones are probably about the best to be honest. (Apart from Apple, who own all)

Sony's are on a par with Apple IMHO. Functional and stylish... Fairly good too, only had a backlight problem with mine but they fixed that quickly.

My last Sony had zero problems, don't think it ever crashed in 18 months! Flogged it and bought another spanking new one.

Like most people this xmas i bought a laptop. Got an Advent from PC world.
Please speak to an expert and not just a salesman .Ask loads of questions & see how clued up they are first. Most important is how you are setting up wirelessly. Also be aware they do not come with any sort of Microsoft Works or Office software built in, as disks are sold separately as is Norton Security.
This will bump up the price considerably.

have had my sony vaio k215m for going on four years now. its been wiped three or four times, had a new disc drive (purely to upgrade with the times, shorter burn times) and thats about it. all the keys still work without so much as a hiccup. its never put a foot wrong and sony screens are second to none so for viewing photos it is top notch.

however, it tends to get noisy!! cleaned it a couple of times and it solves it but looking at a new one soon i think!
