Another Wireless Question

  UR R26R.5, VW Golf R
Ok, so I got my Router and everything set up. Its been detected and working fine. But this is only while the ethernet cable is connected from the router to my network ethernet card in the side of my laptop.

When I run the AOL Auto CD it goes through everything ok with the ethernet cable connected, it then asks me to remove the cable so the wireless adapter can establish a connection with the router. I do so, it goes through a few more steps and says:

The wireless adapter has now been found and updated

Checking wireless access to the router.

All good until the final downer

Wireless access to the router has not been established.

It then gives a list of possible reasons, router not too close or far away etc. But everything is fine I think?

I'm logged on now using the router with the ethernet cable plugged in, as soon as I remove it I have no connection. So its not exactly wireless yet. Although I have rid the AOL sign up etc.

Any ideas how I can establish a connection when I remove the ethernet cable?

Oh and its a speedtouch router.

Cheers.

Ok I've finally sorted it. I'm pretty sure it was down to the switch on the front of the laptop which didnt work 4 times, so I tried one last time and the red light came on to activate it.

Anyway, I had this screen but the 3 connections above the Wireless connection were ALL active. So I had 4 active connections.

So I disabled the 3 above the Wireless, as you can see, and pulled out the ethernet cable. It works a treat.

However, one thing... my connection speed is only 54.0Mbps. Now I know AOL have capped my speed during peak hours (or the other way around, I forget), so I'm presuming this is perhaps because of that. Is there any way I can check my speed on this wireless connection without having the AOL cap interfere? Just so I know there isnt a problem.

I'm just hoping now when I restart the computer I dont have to go through it all again!

the 54mbps is the connection speed between laptop and router, its prob the top speed for each, nothingto do with aol:)

ive got a router capable of 125mbps but my adapter card it only able to run at upto 54mbps, the only way i can make it faster is by upgrading to a 125mbps pci/usb adapter

Even so, I've just been on http://www.speedtest.net/ and my download speed is utter pants with this cap. Or at least I'm hoping its the cap...

140kb/s download and 93kb/s upload. Superb on an 8meg line... :S

Don't worry about it, i'm with virgin 8meg and at peak times (evening/weekend) my speed is only around 300k/b and themost i've everhad from it was just under 5000k/b.

Anyways yeh thats down to aol, their capping, your router speed won't be causing it. If it persists tell them your changing for someone who CAN supply what their offering.

Is there any site I can use where it bypasses the AOL capping just so I can test it properly? I mean, that was 143kb/s, not KB/s. Its so slow! Thats about 17KB/s

Yesterday, during daylight hours (before 5pm anyway) I did a test on the line and got 4500kbps which was better. Certainly higher than the national average. Shame I was capped for a while but hopefully it should come back soon.

capping is just something we have to deal with when going with major providers, obviously with so many users it'd be impossible for everyone to run at full speeds although it would be nice:)

I tested it this morning and it was 4120kb/s. A bit better then.

This capping b****cks is annoying. Going to email AOL now.

Am I correct in thinking with being on an 8meg line, the figure I got above is half of what I could acheive at another time? Not up to speed with all these MB/s and mbps and stuff.

I know that 4120kb/s is around 500KB/s.

honestly i'm not 100% sure, i cannot remember how to work out how many kb, KB etc right now.

But yeah, your line is capable of running at the full 8MB but its very unlikely you'll ever run at that, unless your uncapped and for some reason there are only a handful of people online.
