Any Ideas on this tapping noise?

  S4, Tamora, Conti GT
Speeds up when you rev the engine, no performance drop noticeable, noise has been getting worse over the last week, the whistle/whining noise is the alternator which is being changed under warranty at renault, is the tap tap tap I'm concerned about, car has had cam belt and dephaser changed 9 months/4k miles ago.

Sounds like a dephaser tap, though you say it speeds up with revs? so if you revved the nuts off it that noise will increase right up the rev range?

If so then Id suggest not driving it as that sounds like a possible oil starvation problem - very hard to diagnose over the net but id get it to a specialist to get it checked over - you're near Rentech I think?

yep it definitely speeds up with revs not sure about all the way up the rev range as i have a yozza so you can't hear it after about 3k, problem is i need to drive it back to portsmouth as i have been up to uni in bristol for a few days, have checked the oil and it was at the correct level, its going into to renault for a warranty alternator change, will get them to diagnose the problem and then take it to rentech. How much is it likely to be if it is a dephaser, also what is a dephaser?

Get your head under the bonnet and rev it, if it goes quiet when revved its most likely dephaser.

dephaser is the inlet cam pulley which alters cam timing via oil pressure.

dephaser is a cambelt off job, you never ever re use a cambelt so budget for £500-£600

ok just got under the bonnet a mate revved the car, realised it was 11.45 and revving a cold yozza thought sh*t, but the tapping does get faster with the revving it doesn't go away, walk back round to the front of the house and about 3 people all looking out their windows at me, didn't realise quite how late it was till i got back in.

in that case get it to a specialist as it may be an oil starvation problem - don't drive it

how far can i realistically drive it if its an oil starvation problem, got no lights on the dash with any warnings, I'm only asking this as on wednesday i need to drive back from bristol to portsmouth to get it looked at / fixed

also what will happen with oil starvation cause i have to drive it home, are there any big warning signs, or should i just pull up on a motorway slipway and get the aa to tow me

is it ok to drive the car with this ticking noise (possible dephaser pulley) had cambelt replaced in december last year, should i have been told these need replacing as well?

Well i took the car to renault, and they changed the alternator under warranty, so the whining noise has stopped and the ticking noise they said its the injectors and there is nothing to worry about unless the noise changes or gets louder

Mine is doing exatly the same and it is not the dephaser has your engine been cammed?
