any ideas on why a programme would rund seriously slow?

installed limewire on my mates new dell laptop last night for him as he is seriously un-educated about computers, but the actual programme is seriously slow, and just seems to crash for about 30 seconds after you select anything, i have checked his firewall which allows full access. cant think of anything else it could be any ideas? as i say its a brand new laptop so no speed issues with the actual system.

got a torrent program installed as well?

I found limewire didn't agree with utorrent and refused to load no matter how many times it was reinstalled.

Xp, start > run > msconfig > Startup tab.

Disable All.

Apply, Close, Restart

Try again to see if that helps.

^above will disable virus scanners etc as well more than likely keep that in mind could also disable things you use all the time.

best to disable the ones you know you dont need.

i wouldn't do what chris has advised. thats pretty sill thinf to do imo

Why is it silly? They are background programmes. None of them actually need to be on there. You could start up your virus scanner when your PC starts up by itself. They slow pc's down so much and conflict with other pieces of software. Having these on is just being lazy. It's not like unticking them is going to remove them from your PC, it will just prevent them from starting up, you can still run them manually.

Give him a better idea then...

Limewire requires Java, and from what I've noticed on my own machine is that any Java programs, Limewire, Azureus etc etc just end up slowing the machine down to an unusable level.

I don't run any background programs, so it can't be that causing the problem

Yeah, Limewire is notorious for using a horrendous amount of system resources. I don't use it anymore, because it was so slow.

I had the same prob on my old comp, i tried everything and gave up. But after a format and fresh install limewire installed fine and worked perfect. U could try a different version maybe an older version?

It might be due to low memory and Vitual Memory is slowing it down in Windows. I often get that and I've got 2Gb memory in my PC.
Memory gets easily fragmented and if your friend is downloading loads of files, copying files, moving files etc, that can do a lot of damage to memory usage. The Virtual memory might just be having problems keeping up.

maybe try and narrow the problem down. First uninstall limewire and see what difference it makes. Keep stopping programs until you work out what it is.

Dont know what your problem is, but limewire and azureus are lightning fast on my linux box. They both use java but that isnt a problem for me ?

When I get windows box's in for repair or maintenance I usually find "security centre" style sofware killing the machine by resource hoggging.. getting rid of that usually speed a computer up massivly.

i suggest that you don’t disable your anti-virus from auto-start / running in the background

Limewire...

1) Unistall Limewire
2) If problem is still there update anti virus an scan, Run spyware scans, update windows, update all drivers, disabled unwanted services an bg processes... Check system Logs

3) If problem has gone reinstall / update java an then install limewire again you could try a different version of limewire ..

Some programs that I Suggest

Zone Alarm Pro (Includes Anti Spyware)
Microsoft Anti Spyware
PC-Cillin, in my view Norton eats system recourses
ToolbarCop
