std 182 are quicker than std 172

yeah i understand that, but was just wundering if anyone had driven both and could tell the differance?

for example if you were sat in the passenger seat blindfolded and someone floored it would you be able to tell but the acceleration?

172 Cup & Clio dci Van
172 cup is quicker...than 182 / 172 normal or 182 cup ....182 and 172 cupS both handle best

but blindfolded you wouldnt tell the difference

  monaco172 and ph1 172
i had a 182 went to an evo 7 and now a golf edition 30 with a 172 as a runabout and i cant tell a difference in the clio's

  182FF with cup packs
Until November I had a 172, I now have a 182 with cup packs.

Daily Road use.

Acceleration wise they both seem pretty much the same, the 182 seems to pull a bit harder for a bit longer to me, I was running a Ron98 RSTuner map on both.

Handling wise, the cup pack is spot on. It seems squirmier under hard braking, but nothing that you can't handle. With it being lower, the ride is a littler harsher, but I've done runs from kent to newcastle in in with no problems at all. Just stick the cruise control on and , well, cruise :), come out the other end still being able to walk.

182 gets slightly better MPG, I average between 2 and 4 mpg better on the same work run. Though some of that might be down to cruise control, so less of the accelerating slowly overtime :D

ive not driven both but ive driven my standard 172 and then driven my otherwise standard 172 with a 182 manifold and decat fitted and was a big difference in mid range torque, and imo mid range torque is what makes a car fast in day to day driving, instead of having to drop to 2nd gear you just leave it in 3rd

  ITB'd MK1
theres nothing in it, manufacturing tolerances will mean there are faster versions of either

quoted for truth

I've driven a lot of all variations, there are fast ones and slow ones, and variations inbetween. There's naff all between a 172 and a 182 just based on the name.

i had a punt with a 172 cup on the a55 in the summer. I had a passenger, he didn't. There was nothing in it. They're as close as can be.

I've owned 2 182's and 3 172's. The quickest was my first 172, the others all fairly equal. The 182's are a bit better to drive as standard, but they are also about 10% less economical on fuel (32mpg vs 35mpg), and the exhausts are more expensive when (not if) they break. Personally, I'd get a 172, coilovers, job done. Real men drive ph1's as well ;).

I've driven 182 with cup pack and a trophy and I own a 172 cup, I would say 182 feels better built with less wind noise, trophy has great suspension but is less adjustable in corners, the 172 cup I own is the fastest of them and feels like a go kart. The way they deliver there power is different between them all.

  B/G 182 + PH1 Track
I have a 182 Cup packed my brother has a 172,

Nothing at all in it i could get in his car by mistake and think it was mine (apart from being cleaner)
If i was to buy again i think i would buy a 172,for a few reasons, at the time when i bought my 182 it was relatively cheap with low miles and a lady owner.
But i cud have saved money buy getting a well looked after 172, also if we are out in carls car alot less people stick to your bumper or try to race you. And as standard the 182 exhaust is terrible (looks / build) so when i got my AAS custom made up it cost me more for the exhaust. and now uts cambelt time in march lots of money agen :<

But if you want the quickest one, get a PH1.

I'd take the 172, my 182 feels so much more restricted, doesnt "flow" have to work it harder, acceleration at 5k is lot more noticeable, but then it's noticlebly slower below 5k.

well when i was buying mine i went for the 172 over the 182,due to the colour and the noise, the 182 had a raspy noise and a didnt like it tbh and i thought the silver was a better 1 too the 182,i think its just cosmetic tho theyre both gud motors :)

Don't the 182 & 172 Cup have different suspension geometry to the 172? So regardless of straight line speed there should be a difference in the way they drive, certainly the increased castor I've read about would make a noticeable difference...

Not a massive difference. I've not driven a 172cup, but the 182's don't feel that different to the 172's. The only one that feels vastly different is the Trophy.

i've driven every single variation

phs1 is the most fun
172 cup is quickest
trophy is nice, hate the seats though (sorry!)
the rest, same same, 182's corner better than the 172, but thats it
