AOL High Usage Cap WTF?

  UR R26R.5, VW Golf R
I've recently paid out for AOL Gold 8Mbs and when its working at or near this speed its spot on for downloading on Newsgroups etc.

However, today its been 58Kb/s which is just utter pants. I did loads of speed tests online and got around 480kbs. Rubbish. I phoned AOL to ask why and they said because of the amount of downloading being noticed on my line there's a high member usage cap so it would be reduced to allow others a good connection.

What the F*CK?

I need a new Service Provider. What do people make of Sky Broadband? The offers and prices seem good. I'm paying £17.99p/m at the moment, and dont even have a router.

AOL do it all the time.

It would be quite common in the evening i wouldbe on 256k connection instead of my 1mb line. but thta apppears to have changed now. another member had the same problems as me. tbh, i don't think they are jsut capping you scuthc, it is just they are s**t and can't handle the peopel they have so they try and limit you on the sly.

aol - s**t

thats the prob with providers likr aol, they got so many users they're servers cant handle evry1 at full speed so wen u download over a certain amount they cut u bk, look for sum1 giving unlimited usage

BT broadband itself is great, kinda different though as we are our own ISP (I buy it wholesale and sell it to our offices) so I've not got any BT end user equipment, just my netgear wireless jobbie.

we was on BT broadband for about a year, sometimes the line would drop completely, some days it wouldnt work.

When we moved house we asked bt to migrate to our new house they said it would take 4 weeks. Told them not to bother and we had sky instead.

At the time, dunno if its still offered, but with sky tv you get 2mb broadband free or you can have the upgraded 16mb broadband for £10 a month (which we got)

its very good, we get a constant 10 meg and sometimes we get the full 16.

once a month or so the line will drop off for about 2 hours, i dunno if this is for maintenance or something. Apart from that, no problems

I need a new ISP too, with Toucan you are limited to 0.75gb over a week between 6-11pm which is crap for a family of 4 all using the net every night.

They have put us on a shared connection a few times now for going over so really have to watch our data usage at night.

Can't get BeThere out here but the 2mb BT I'm using at work now is good, do they have a fair usage policy cos we need phone combined ideally.
