Apex springs - sqeaking

1

182 Spiced

Can anyone PLEASE advise what shocks I can use on my standard 182 28k. The apex ride is a little too harsh for me now (getting old- me??) and there is a squeaking and knocking noise (after 4k since changing) coming from the front drivers side when driving over pot holes on dodgy roads...

(IF IT HELPS and it jmay have nothing to do woth the knocking but I had my brakes changed too and the car does veer to the left under heavy breaking at fast speeds... I'm gng to look into that!!) oh er...

Can't afford coilovers and don't mind replacing the shocks so any ideas on what to go for will be helpful...

I've attached a lovely pic too :)

  VW ....
i've lost count of how many people have changed from Apex ,they're not for everybody ,never once have i seen anyone complain about Eibach .... go figure

I went from Eibach to Apex, as did fUbAr.

We both agree there is no real performance advantage with either.

Coilovers are a different story mind.

I have had both numerous times on other cars and the eibachs are better might not be alot but enough to never buy apex again!!

thanks guys... i may look into eibachs, but wont new shocks cushion the ride and keep the drop, and does the knocking sound mean I need new shocks anyhow??

uprated shocks are likely to be stiffer as well mate - not likely to be as cushioned as it is now. If you were to buy H&R coilovers your ride would be better but then your talking loads of money.

the knocking comes when gng over bumps and pot holes on the road, i have noticed the mounts on the front seem to be higher than they used to if that makes sense. the rubber (circular in shape) has a gap between it and the body. As far as i remember it was always flush with the body (hope that makes sense)

didn't really want to spend too much upto £300 or so... looks like eibachs are looking the better choice, but the drop of 40mm is soo nice :)

i thought new shocks would be softer! obvioulsy not... does that mean ppl who do not have coilovers but change springs and shocks have a hard ride as I do...

Thanks again guys

  yep.
apex are harsher but your car will look lower.

handling improves no end - cant make an omlette without breaking a few eggs.

I bought my -40mm Apex springs when i bought the ex demo car (172 cup) from lookers chester @ 6000 miles as soon as i got home i put springs on and had no probs im now on 25000 miles!

Ive just had similar noise on 182 with cup packed suspension, had front anti roll bar bushes changed and now sorted, might not be your springs

Eibach are way better than Apex, but i like both!

if i want to give it some sideways stuff then Eibach, if i wanna look cool then Apex

Apex are purely cosmetic , they do not make the car handle any better in some case's worse,(in my case) they just lower the center on gavity there for making you feel lower to the ground ,does anyone know the poundage of these springs ? reason i ask this if the spring is to stiff hard or harsh (apex) the shock gets to much rebound ! and this does not make your car handle it will probaley make i feel skitish .

Best thing to do is find out the poundage of the standard spring , and get someone to make you up a set of sorter springs same poundage then the car will sit lower and wont compromise the handerling to much .

I from what ive tested eibach seem to be the best spring out there (pro kit ) for drive ability.

And as for looks sportlines .

Apex imo are not a good spring !

This is all my opinion by the way some people will not agree .

Thanks !

A man who knows what he's talking about!!

I've tried both, i have eibach sportlines on my 182 and they are spot on..lower a little yet give good handling at the same time..what more could you ask for in a spring..
