Applying photoshop actions

How is this done? I've come across these on deviantart and some look pretty cool to try.

any, I think I might have done it now, alt+f9 to get actions up, then load action... im just trying it now.

i use them quite a bit, but ones i have recorded myself just for batch processing image files.
