unless its an end of line(very late model) mk1 then it may have the 16v engine.they used the 16v in the mk1 rsi though

ok mate, cheers. Id prefer a 16v, but RXEs seem to be easier to find, Id guessed they were 8v cos theyre a bit cheaper than the 16v equivalent.

The mk1 (as in 91-98) 1.8 RSi is an 8valve. The mk2 RSi is a 1.6 16v.

No, the mk1 valver was a 1.8 16v, the Rsi model at the time was a 1.8 8v. Only once the new shape Clio was launched in 98, with the bug eyed headlamps, did the RSi get a 1.6 16v engine.
