Are tints checked during an MOT?

Tinted Windows

Tinted windows are not included in the MOT test, but the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) have started roadside checks to make sure tinted windows follow the Road Vehicle (Construction & Use) Regulations. These specify the minimum levels of light that must pass through the windscreen and front side windows. VOSA has produced an information leaflet on window tints which answers such questions as:

• What is excessively tinted glass?
• Legally where do I stand?
• Why are tinted windows not included in the MOT test?

i didnt think they were cause when i got pulled ( bought the car with them on) i was speaking to the police and he was explaining it all. removed the front ones now though

I had my m.o.t about 3 weeks ago and my tints werent checked... never been stopped by the police either, touch wood!!

MOT centres don't check them because they can't check, could possibly be a failure if they where excessively tinted. But what about the back street garages that don't know about manufacturers privacy tints etc.

yea i had my 182 for six months been past 100s of police and done many miles but they pulled me near my house. ahh well

90%+ of MOT testing stations can't warrant the expense of the testing equipment to check the tints. Hence they don't normally get checked. VOSA testers will however have the equipment and will test the tints.

no they are not tested in the mot they can give you an advisory tho if they think they are too dark like limo on the front.

the reason they cant do it is because they cant determine the light levels outside the car and the light on the day of the test.

they would have to have a light meter in the car and one reading it on the outside of the glass then they would have to have one in the mot station sp they can determine the ammount of light that is in there building. then they would need one monitoring the ammount of light from outside like if it was overcast or a sunny day would contribute the levels.

would need way to much calibration all the time so they dont include it.

and if it came to it that it was you dont legally have to have glass in the doors anyway for the test so people would just take the glass out

yeah they aint too bad in my area to be honest but its different all over the uk.

we are a window tinting company called tinted vision

pics below are of a clio sport with 70% on the front which is legal and 28 percent on the back.

in pic one you can see how light the film is but in pic 2 from a different angle looks darker its because the back is dark so no light is coming into the car making the front look darker

Ok mate I work about 6 miles from your company! Why only 28% on the back? Will 70% allround look good? I have a black mk2 172?

this one is 70 all round but the car had slight tints on the back to start

you will notice its been done but its not in your face dark
