Asset Tags

  Rav4
Have any of you guys implemented this and was it worth all the hassle?

Getting the labels would not be a problem,

Just want to write a bit of script, or aquire it that auto generates the asset numbers, maybe not worth doing....

Then through this number via an interface maybe a RDC / Remote assistance (depending on requirements) can automatically like to that individual machine.

Thanks,

G.

We use asset tags, however, ours are printed barcodes, with the number already on the ticket. We literally just stick them on and update the asset log.

We use a custom system which retrieves the service tags from the systems and enters it into a user database, again scripting logs the owner of the laptop, takes snapshots of running process's, the name of the machine, model and it also tells me what software they have installed.

There are also hot linked buttons to

vnc
psexec
manage (mmc)
shutdown
wakeup
run the logon script
open an iPython shell
connect to the admin share
etc.

From your asset log can you instantly manage the users terminal?

We can

We use LANDesk which logs all asseted systems in an inventory, you can run inventory scans which will give you system info like RAM, Processor, HDD space etc, also software on machine.

Also this is what we use to remote onto users machines.

With every new build we install a small file which gets pinged by the LANDesk management console and allows the console to remote to the machine and scan the inventory on it.

Same here. It's a bit of a ball ache when we get s**t loads of new hardware to send out to other developers we're working with, but without them we would never be able to keep track of where things are.
