at 57000 miles ?

  Clio182
Hi all , as you can see i am new to this forum and even newer to the Clio Sport 182 world as i have just purchased a 182 this evening. It has 57000 miles on the clock with good service history but no cambelt change. Should i do this soon or can i leave it for a while . The dephaser pulley is making no noise at all. What are your thoughts? i am planning on replacing the cambelt around september time and i wont be using the car as a daily drive as i have my company car for that. What are your thoughts? The car will literally be used at the weekends and i gather i will cover around 3000 miles till september.

Thanks

How old is the car?

They perish with age so the intervals for replacement are specified as both mileage and age.

It's a 182. It's over 5 years old.

i'd get it changed without delay or risk an expensive failure if you're happy with that risk.

if the car is 9 years old... never been done, I would get it done.if your keeping the car anyway.. they say to replace it after 5 years... check the engine for any stickers,... I am deciding whether to do mine... kind of in the same boat as you.. my sticker said was done at 57000.. no written proof.. if you get it done, get your water pump changed too.. at the same time.. if it goes after you do the belts ..costs loads in labour to get at it..

Ah the old valve in the pistons game!

Good of luck sorting that mess out if it goes ping!

For or the sake of it, book it in at a specialist and get it done , asap

It's a 55 plate . Okay well looks like I had better get it done then , what you looking at cost wise ? Il get the dephaser and water pump done too . The reason why I said September is because il take it off the road then and Itl give me a bit of time to save up the pennies too instead of splashing out on the car and also the belts.

There's no guarantee it won't snap before then, but there's no guarantee it will either.

Only you can decide your luck

Thing is , at just under 57000 miles surely a belt won't snap . Il have a look at the belt condition over the weekend .

Age plays a part in rubber aswell!
You could have a tyre that's don say 6k but is 4years old and cracked to f**k. Only takes something to make it worse and bang the tyres gone

cambelts the same, expect if that goes , new engine time

Have you seen a bicycle tyre after you leave it in the garage over winter? Or tried to stretch a really old elastic band? The point is that some materials deteriorate with age as quickly as they deteriorate with use, hence every manufacturer that you've ever come across puts a mileage AND an age on belts never failing to attach the clause "whichever comes first." In the case of Renault I believe the exact wording is: "5 years OR 72k miles, whichever comes first."

Clearly no-one here is trying to tell you that it will snap tomorrow, or even that belts/tensioners fail on the dot at 5 years 1 month or 75k miles. It's more that the cost of a rebuild, since the valve train is an "interference design," far outweighs the cost of prevention. Plenty of threads about failed tensioners/£few k rebuilds.

Yeah it's fine , I will get it done before I put it on the road . I'm a forklift engineer by trade and do the cam belts on the counter balances which have the 2 litre VW golf engine in so I'm fully aware of the potential damage a failed cambelt can do ! Thanks for your help

I paid £400 for belt, water pump and dephaser last time. For £400 it's hardly worth messing about with, going to cost a lot more than that if the engine goes pop.

You're not planning on doing this yourself are you?

in this day and age, you would think someone could design a belt to last the life of the car...made of a composite material that will not degrade over time ,can resist heat cycles and strong enough never to break... it just seems such a rip off ,money making racket..
they have us all paranoid .. shall we risk it or not..

You could go chain-driven, but again that can have issues too.

They could do as you suggested, but it's all cost!

I know some bmws have chains ,you have to take the engine out to get at them.. people were complaining about the design of the engine.. but bmw excuse was ,they made the chains to last the life of the car.. but some was failing.. I think it was over £1000 to replace them..

The new 1.6 turbo engines are chain driven (thanks Nissan because they never went wrong for you in the past)

Oh great, those are going to be fun if it goes. Hopefully Nissan did a revised tensioner upgrade after the previous crap they did

I'm sure the French took a reliable system and tried to make it work for less €€€'s

Same with the M9R 2.0dCi (ive not seen the 1.6dCi yet but i assume that'll be chain driven to)

Time will tell on reliability but so far so good.

And yeah when it comes to chain driven cambelts the engines tend to be noisy along with they can have lubrication issues too and if so the wear and tear increases and they can rattle like hell!

I could do , iv got the auto data sheets on the job too , 5.5 hours they say , so that would be roughly two days for me. Haha.

Ignore the AutoData process and figures, they're wrong! Find yourself a download of the Renault PDF manual (Search function should turn something up for you) and make sure you use ALL the setting tools. Its not a difficult job but it's not for the faint hearted either as you do need more than your average DIY tools to do the job right (Something to accurately dial in angle fixings for one that isn't a wheel type tool because there's no room for one)
