Audio Problems

I have a Kenwood KDC-5021 HU and some JBL GTO-935E 6x9s. No matter what bass/mid/treble setting i use, i cant get any bass out of the speakers, checked all wiring, connectors etc. When the settings are maxed, and the bass kicks in, it distorts like youd never believe. Anyone got any suggestions ?

You say you checked all the wiring, are you certain the speakers are in phase?? Just that the symptoms you describe sound like the speakers are out of phase, try swapping the + and - terminals around. If its not that, sounds like the speakers are shagged.

head units can not provide bass, its not your speakers distorting, its your head unit!

get an amp and sub if u want bass. ur head unit output is about 10 rms, get an amp around 50 rms then u will get some bass out of the speakers, not that 6x9s can really produce much bass

silly question are you running a HPF (high pass filter) is so u wont get any bass out of them they need to be either full range or low pass to get bass,

Cuptastic - off topic but have you still got those Kicker solos for sale. I had to run one of them and an Audiobahn AW1500Q at the FCS.

chuck the 6*9s in my opionion, or just disconnect them and get an amp and a sub, or, if you cant afford the space get the new genesis 6*9 subs - the only good 6*9s on the market IMO. amp them up, if you have got new front amp those, if not, get urself some component speakers as the first step,

6*9s are not built to give bass though (apart formt the genesis ones which are!!!)

Thats My opinion anyway

Hmm... I think 6x9s are built to give a certain amount of bass... more than standard 5.25" round speakers anyway. In fact, in a way, bass is what theyre all about. 6x9"s and 7x10"s are the closest thing to a sub you can get while still working with speakers with a smaller cone area/mounting depth. To your average Joe, 6x9"s produce a lot of bass. But whether they deliver acceptable SQ is a different matter altogether! Basically theyre all right for someone wanting to upgrade from a basic factory system, but not really a big SPL or SQ fanatic, and wanting a better, more powerful sound accross the frequency spectrum, but without forking out for separates. But they are no substitute for nice components and a sub.

Thats my tuppence worth anyhow!

Now regarding the lack of bass, I understood it that you meant not just that the bass was lacking a bit in the sound, but that there was a real problem at the lower end that meant you were getting no bass from them at all. This isnt due to the inherent weaknesses of 6x9"s but some other further fault, wither with the speakers or the setting up. If it affects both, my guess is theyre out of phase. If it affects one mroe than the other Id say theres a good chance theyre blown.

If theres a lot of distortion, but only when you turn it up, Id look at the amp, cos it could be clipping.

In general those JBL GTO series 6x9s are reasonably powerful, and should be packing a fair amount of bass (maybe not sub-bass but still what one would term bass) so Id have another look at them. Even try wiring them up to a mates system, etc. to test them.
